マクベス、ハムレット、オセローと並ぶシェイクスピアの４大悲劇のひとつ。

単なる小説として読むと、序盤の話の筋からして、不自然な気がします。

老王リアが、退位にあたり３人の娘に財産分与をしようとするが、
２人の姉は心にもない甘言でリア王に取り入り、末娘のコーディリアは
心のこもった率直な言葉をもらすため勘当の身となってしまう。

ただ、このくだりで、リア王のコーディリアに対する怒りが急過ぎて、不自然に感じてしまいます。
ここをリア王の老いによる耄碌と取ることで、読み進むこともできるが、小説としては不完全さが残ります。

やはり舞台むきな話なのだと思います。舞台だとそういう不自然な部分も舞台ならではの「型」として勢いで見てしまいそうなので。

一方、王権を追われ、こじき同然となり、狂気の嵐の中で、自然の荒れ狂う描写と、リア王の気持ちの荒れ模様が混ざり合って描かれるところは見事だと思いました。
人生の内面が描かれている作品です。

シェイクスピアは世界的に権威が確立しており、賛辞以外は許されず、つまらないと書くと「文学のわからない素人」よばわりされるような風潮がある。
しかし、あえて書くけど現代日本人の私が読んだ「リア王」はつまらなかった。
シェイクスピアという事を隠し、この作品を先入観なしに読ませたら、たいていの現代人はそう言うのではなかろうか？
「シェイクスピアは世界的権威だ」という先入観があって読むから、無理に凄さを感じようとしている人が多いのではなかろうか？

トルストイは「リア王」をつまらないと酷評したそうだが、その理由はリア王の激情が不自然だし、道化との対話は余計な悪ふざけだとの事らしい。
私はトルストイの指摘は正しいと思う。
嵐の中でわが身の悲劇を泣き叫ぶというのは、どう考えても不自然だろう。

shakespeareをはじめて読みました。最初は英文と並べながらこの福田版を読んでいたのですが、途中でその方式を放棄して、ひとまず翻訳で読み通すことにしました。音とリズムではなくドラマをひとまず味わうことに徹してみました。ところで、「リア王」を最初に読んだのがはたしてよかったのでしょうか？筋の発端は陳腐な問答です。そしてその後は二つのプロットが平行して進み後に交差することになります。絶え間なく再生産されて登場してくる悪を動かすものは、決してその根源が掘り下げられて提示されることはありません。ただその醜悪さだけがこれでもかというほど互いに共鳴しあってその論理的な到達点へ進んでいきます。最後にかけて、登場人物は立て続けに死んでいくことになります。そして明らかにされるのは虚飾の構造の無意味さというわけで、ここには出口はありません。これを最初に読んだのは間違いだったのかもしれません。
