　この本の中では高利貸しのユダヤ人、シャイロックをどう捉えるかによって評価が二分すると思う。普通に話の筋を読んで行けば、どん欲で意地汚い高利貸しを徹底的に懲らしめる勧善懲悪の喜劇として楽しめる。債務者アントーニオーの友人により借金返済のめどが立ったにも拘わらず、シャイロックは執拗なまでに債権者の処罰を訴える。それが仇となり、自ら裁判で裁かれることとなってしまう様子は痛快だ。一方、別の評価として、シャイロックの悲運を描いた悲劇とみることができる。なぜなら、シャイロックはユダヤ人であるためにキリスト教徒に野良犬扱いされ、口汚くののしられ、ほとんどの財産を没収されて、挙句の果てにキリスト教に改宗させられてしまうからだ。
　歴史的に見れば、本書は喜劇として捉えられる。だが、現代の文脈にそって物語を捉えてみるとシャイロックの悲劇として評価できるのではないだろうか。シェイクスピアが本作品をいずれに位置づけたにせよ、個々の読者により捉え方は多種多様になると予想される。これから「ヴェニスの商人」を読もうとお考えの方は、ぜひシャイロックの悲運にも着目した上で、評価していただきたい。
　最後に、債務者アントーニオーを裁く裁判官がユダヤ人であったら判決はどうなっていたのか。高利貸しシャイロックに圧倒的有利な判決がくだっていただろうか。そして、本作品が悲劇として語り継がれていただろうか、私には非常に興味深い。

この作品におけるシャイロックの描き方はユダヤ人差別ではなかろうか？
シャイロックは、汚いユダヤ人、犬よばわりされ、財産を没収され、娘に逃げられ、挙句の果てに最後はキリスト教に改宗させられる。
あまりに悲惨である。
それに比べれば「ちびくろサンボ」など可愛いもので、どこが黒人差別だと言いたくなる。

僕は言葉狩りをするつもりは毛頭ない。
むしろこういう作品が残っていく事で、当時の時代背景がわかるので、そのまま残して欲しいと思っている。
１６世紀のヨーロッパにおけるユダヤ人に対する偏見がいかにひどかったかという貴重な資料になる。
欲の塊、悪の権化として人々にもっとも伝わりやすいのがユダヤ人だったのだろう。
現代の価値観からすればひどい話だが、歴史的資料として是非残して欲しい。
「ちびくろサンボ」のように、くさい物にふた的発想では差別はなくならない。
現代の価値観で過去の作品を断罪し、抹殺するなどあってはならない。

しかし、ここまで徹底して悪の象徴として描かれると、むしろ滑稽で笑える。
勧善懲悪の物語として純粋に楽しめた。

シェイクスピアの喜劇作品。
悪徳高利貸しから、友人のため金を借りる主人公。担保は「胸の肉１ポンド」。
金を返せなくなれば胸をえぐられる！　命の危機！　読んでいる間はどうなるのかハラハラです。
内容紹介に既に喜劇と書いてあるので結末が途中で見え隠れしやすいのですが、見せ場のどんでん返しには思わず拍手を送ります。なるほどこれは喜劇です。
台本で書かれているため、状況説明や描写は台詞の間にちょこちょこっと現れるだけです。慣れるまでは読みづらいかも。
でも、古くて堅そうなイメージは払拭。喜劇の基本という感じの作品。
シェイクスピアで何を読もうか迷っている人、迷っていて「明るい話が好き」な人には一押しです。
