シェイクスピアの名作なので多くの方は、内容についてはおおよそご存知だと思います。特筆すべきはこの翻訳で、リズム、内容、響き、言葉遊びなど非常に心地よくスラスラと一気に読破できました。これはオススメです。

翻訳はそれ自身が生き物のように進化する。400年前の英語は、400年前の日本語に訳されても困るが、「この今」の日本語に移せばよいわけでもない。福田恒存の、流麗で格調高い文体（読むにはこれが一番）。小田島雄志の、舞台でそのまま喋れる生き生きとした口語訳。松岡和子の、ニュートラルで演出家が自在に活用できる名訳。ハムレットは歴史物なので、一番ナウい日本語では腰が弱くなってしまう。韻文を生かすためにも、やや硬質で様式美のある日本語がよい。狂言師の野村萬斎を念頭に置いたこの新訳は、こうした理想に一歩近づいた。

ハムレットが初めて口を開く重要科白、A little more than kin, and less than kindを比べてみよう。「親族より近いが、心情は遠い」（小田島）。「血のつながりは濃くなったが、心のつながりは薄まった」（松岡）。「お世辞にも叔父は親父（おやじ）と同じとは言えぬ」（河合）。意味より音を重視し、「お」音の言葉遊びに転換したのは見事。第2幕第2場、ポロニアスが罵倒するハムレットの「下手な」英語the most beautified Opheliaは、「美しきなるものオフィーリア」（小田島）、「美の化身たるオフィーリア」（松岡）に対して、河合訳は「誰よりも美化されたオフィーリア」。逍遥以来100年、先行者の苦闘と成果の上に、また一輪の花が咲いた。

意外に、言葉がなじみやすかった。
昔風の言い回しでありながら、響きに日本語の音を感じさせるあたりが、読みやすい。
ハムレットの口調の癖などもうまく表現されている。本当は復習などには向いていない気の弱い若者であることが、伝わった。

特に気に入ったのは、巻末に「to be or not to be」のくだりが、今までの訳本でどう翻訳されてきたかを全て並べている部分。
さまざまな努力をシェイクスピア物の訳者が重ねていることがわかり、おもしろい。
「生きるべきか、死ぬべきか、それが問題だ」と掲載した訳本がこれまで存在していなかったのには、驚いた。
