多くの著作を残したゲーテ。彼の言葉をまとめるには、文庫一冊ではとても収まりきれません。 ゆえにこの一冊は頁のどこをめくってもきらめく言葉であふれています。ゲーテの思想の断片を知る上でも、きっと良い足がかりとなることでしょう。

雑誌で彼の格言のひとつを目にして、かってみましたがすごいよかったです。彼の詩などはなにか饒舌すぎる気がして避けていましたが、この格言集はよいです。自分で考えたことが、とても簡潔な優れた文章に凝縮されて、しかも、詩のようでもあり、ふと思い返したりします。

とりわけ好きなひとつは、、

　処世のおきて
気持ちよい生活を作ろうと思ったら、
すんだことをくよくよせぬこと、
滅多なことに腹をたてぬこと、
いつも現在を楽しむこと、
とりわけ、人を憎まぬこと、
未来を神にまかせること。（「警句的」から）

おすすめです。中には同意しかねるものもありますが、琴線に触れる格言がたくさんあります。訳もすばらしいです。
この後、思わずいくつか他の格言集も買ってしまいましたが、これに勝るものはありませんでした。
