将来英雄になるであろう非凡な人間は、それが英雄となるために避けられぬことであるならば、社会に有益でない人間を殺めても、許される。
ナポレオンに心酔する主人公は、自ら築いたこの理論をもとに、高利貸しの老婆、さらには何の罪もないその妹までも惨殺してしまいます。

たしかに歴史を紐解いてみても、ナポレオンのみならず、三国志の曹操や日本の織田信長の例もあるように、既成の概念を打ち破る人間とは、とかく他人の血を流すことを躊躇いません。これら負の英雄像を、チャップリンが映画「殺人狂時代」において、「ひとり殺せば悪党で、100万人だと英雄だ」と大いに皮肉ったことはあまりに有名です。

主人公は、第一の殺人でいきなり精神的な行き詰まりに陥り、「英雄」となる前に平凡な「悪党」で終わることを恐れ、苦しむ。本書の大部分はこの非凡と平凡の狭間で揺れる主人公の心の葛藤で構成されています。
この物語をいかに捉えるかは、読み手によって千差万別でしょう。私はシンプルに「愛の物語」と捉えています。

なぜなら、上記の理論は彼を支える信念であっても、殺人の動機ではないと考えるからです。生活に苦しむ自分のため、富豪との愛のない結婚へ望もうとしている（と主人公は思い込んでいる）妹への愛。そして無力な自己への怒り。それらが相まって彼を殺人へ駆り立てたのではないでしょうか。しかし、平凡な人間に殺人は大事業です。それを完遂するための心の拠り所として、かの英雄論が浮かび上がってくるのです。が、すべからく英雄とは唯一無二のもの。他者を模範に英雄たらんと望む時点で、すでに彼は英雄の資格を失っており、自己の空想の中での「聖」の立場から、現実としての「俗」へ転落します。

そんな敗者を救うのが、薄幸の娼婦という「俗」の象徴たるソーニャからの一点の曇りもない愛である、という点こそ、この物語の妙でしょう。主人公とソーニャだけではありません。帝政ロシア時代の輝ける首都サンクトペテルブルクは陰惨で気だるい空気に包まれ、その反面、最後の舞台であるシベリアの流刑地は、陽光の眩しい、さながら楽園のような場所。「聖」も「俗」も人間が作り出したものある以上、人間の意志ひとつでどちらにでも転じてしまえることを、この作品から強く感じることができます。
多少取っ付きにくい文体ではありますが、読めば必ず得るもののある一冊です。

この本の中核を成しているのは、やはり主人公の元学生ラスコーリニコフによる殺人の動機でしょう。それは、予審判事ポルフィーリイとの言論対決によって徐々に明らかになっていきます。非凡な人間には、自分自身が納得する理由があれば、法律を破る（殺人を犯す）権利がある、という理論が殺人の動機になるわけですが、その後主人公は、殺人を犯したことに対する倫理的な問題よりも、自分は殺人を犯すに足る非凡な人間ではなくてただの凡人なのではないか、という問題に悩みます。この問題にドストエフスキーは、最終的に理屈で説明の付かない結論を与えていますが、その説明をあまりしないところに、かえって著者の深い洞察力がうかがえます。軽いカタルシスではなく、重たい問題意識を読者に与え、考え悩ませるのが狙いであるとすれば、まさに絶妙のエンディングと言えるでしょう。

ところで、この本を古典たらしめているのは、殺人を犯したことによって苦悩するラスコーリニコフの姿が、多くの青年が成長の一時期に持つ悩みを具現化しているからだと思いますが、ドストエフスキーの問題意識は別のところにもあるようです。本書は、爛熟のロマノフ王朝下、農奴解放期の大混乱の中で、知的階級に属する若者たちが、生半可な理論を振りかざして、革命運動をしていたことに対する批判なのではないでしょうか。金貸しの婆さんを殺すこと、つまり現体制を転覆すること、それは同時に頭の弱いリザヴェータ、すなわち普通に生きている庶民の生活を破壊することにつながる、その責任が取れるのか、とドストエフスキーはこの本で警鐘を鳴らしているように思えます。その意味で私は、金貸しの婆さんはともかく、リザヴェータを殺したことにはほとんど言及しないラスコーリニコフに不気味さを感じると同時に、著者の視点の鋭さを見ます。

個人的な意見では、
物語は終り方によりそれ以上に素晴らしくなったり、
それまでの感動を無にしてしまったりすると思っています。

＜罪と罰＞の終り方は実に無心論者のドストエフスキーらしいものだった。
決して”罪を犯した人間も祈れば許される”とかいう類ではなく、
最後の３行のあたりの”彼を救ったのは・・・だった”という表現。

この最後の３行が素晴らしく、
それ以外の長いストーリーが全て＜伏線＞のように感じた。

読んだことのない人には是非お勧めしたい作品です。

罪を犯し罰を受ける。
しかし罰を受けても罪は消えない。
罪を背負い続けて生きる人間を救うものはなんなのか？
