ペテルブルクでは無頼どもの頭目であり、幼女を陵辱し、優れた知性も精力もありながら「自分はなぜ生きているのか」という意義を見出せず、自殺するスタヴローギンは、文豪が生んだ最も深刻な人間像である。個人的な読み方に過ぎないが、文豪の処女作「貧しき人々」の少女ワルワーラは、結局文通をしていた小役人マカールと別れ、金持ちブイコフに身を委ねる。そこでスタヴローギンの母親の名前もワルワーラである。母親は息子に会うと恐ろしい気分に襲われて直視できない。なぜか。この母親は処女作のいたいけな少女のなれの果てとして造形されたのではないだろうか。愛のない行為で出生した人間に存在意義を求めるのは無理である。まるでスタヴローギンは母親になった少女に復讐をしているかのようである。出版の際に削除されたチホンとスタヴローギンの対話は、信仰者とニヒリストとの直接対決であり、本書の圧巻である。文豪の作品の中でも完成度が高い。

まず上巻はこの悲劇の序曲でしかない、と言う印象を受けるだろう。裏切り、殺人、自殺、等おぞましい光景が繰り広げられて行く。キリーロフとピョートルの対話はカミュのシシフォスの神話に引用されるなど、哲学的内容が多大に含まれている。そしてなによりこの悲劇のラストシーンはこの物語を全て物語っていると言っても過言ではない。スタヴローギンの苦悩とピョートルの焦燥がついにここで爆発するのである。当時ドストエフスキーが雑誌で連載していた頃は家庭向きの雑誌だからと断られた。スタヴローギンの告白が含まれているのがとても嬉しい。

　物語が終了してもなおおおくの謎を秘めているという感じです。とくに組織のリーダーであったと思われるピョートルが今後どうなってしまいうのか、そもそも、この組織とは一体なんであったのかさえ十分な説明がありません。しかし、ドストエフスキーの思想については遺憾なく強く、深く表れている作品であると思います。
　僕が注目したいのは、死の直前、破滅の直前に際した人物が一様に何かを悟るということ。キリスト教的な「愛」のようなものを感じ取っていきます。そして、皆「神」に感謝し、自分の罪を懺悔します。
　これこそが歴史的過渡期を迎えていたロシアにドストエフスキーが期待していたものなのではないでしょうか？
　悪霊に取り憑かれた豚が湖に飛び込んで自殺していくように「新思想」「無神論」に取り憑かれたロシアをキリスト的人物、すなわちスタヴローギンによって、破滅からの再生を願っているのではないでしょうか？
　スタヴローギンは悪魔、悪霊であると同時に、救世主であり神であったように思えます。あの中で正気を保っていたのは彼とダーリヤだけでした。彼はキリスト的な、彼女は聖母マリア的な存在であったと感じました。
　ドストエフスキーは「ロシア的」なもの、「ロシア」自体を憎んでいた。そして、同時に最も愛していたのも「ロシア」だったのではないでしょうか？そういった二律背反性がスタヴローギンという悪魔と神を持つ、悲劇的な人物を生み出したのではないでしょうか？
