フランス文学の不朽の名作、スタンダールの『赤と黒』 です。

レナール夫人(ルイーズ)と主人公ジュリアン・ソレルのどんどん燃え上がる恋の炎が見物です。

初めは駆け引き(使命感?)のつもりでルイーズを誘惑していたジュリアンでしたが、彼女の魅力に触れ、次第に本気で愛するようになります。

しかしここは不倫の恋ですから、2人には辛く悲しい別れが待っています。

何年か前に読んで以来、この本は私の愛読書です。
何度読んでもどきどきします。

新潮社の『赤と黒』の訳は比較的読みやすいと思うので、初めて読む方にもおすすめです。

この小説を最後まで読ませるのは、主人公ジュリヤン・ソレルの魅力、それに尽きると思います。
強い上昇志向、そして、屈折した内面。「赤と黒」を読むと、
彼が生き生きと心の中で動き回る気がします。

私が一番心を打たれたのは、レーナル夫人の純情でした。
若い男特有の、ジュリヤンの残酷な誘惑心に負けてしまった夫人。
彼女が無垢さゆえに、ジュリヤンにはまりこんでいく気持ちが、
痛いほど伝わってきました。
（そのへんがスタンダールの心理描写の巧さです）
マチルドとの、駆け引きに満ちた恋愛も、おもしろかったのですが、
レーナル夫人の恋心には、全身全霊を愛に傾けてしまった人にだけ
見いだせる「愛」の透明さがあるような気がして、惹かれます。

最後の一行にはぞくりとさせられます。

スタンダールは恋愛心理描写の達人であると、つくづく思わされる小説です。

大傑作！この小説を読むと、やれ芥川賞だ〜、やれ直木賞だ〜などと言っている今の作家の小説など読む必要がないことがよくわかる。登場人物の心理がＡからＢに変化するとき、その間の過程が１０段階あるとすると、スタンダールは、その１０段階全てを克明に書いている。しかし、今の作家の本を読んでも、せいぜい２〜３くらいしか書いていない。スタンダールは、心理描写の密度が圧倒的に濃いのである。凡庸な作家の本を読む暇があったら、スタンダールを読もう。
