若い頃この小説を読んだとき、あまり面白いと感じなかった。政略結婚が当たり前の統一前イタリアならではの、上流社会の不倫話。ファブリスもその因果のまっただなか。現代に引きなおすのが間違っているのだが、ちょっとでも想像を働かせてしまうとゲンナリするのだ。ただ、４０を超え再読したところ、モスカ伯爵や公爵夫人が、自分より若い恋敵に敵わないと思いつつも競う合う気持ちの描写がなんとも興味深い。スタンダール５５歳の作品で、それもむべなるかな。この２人に比べれば、ファブリスなんぞは単なる狂言回しにしか思えない。

19世の小説を苦手としている方もたくさんいらっしゃると思います。しかし！！『パルムの僧院』に限りそんな方も、すんなり読めるはずです。だらだらとした情景描写や長ったらしい説明などありません。これは小説ではない、と言った同時代人がいたくらいです。

全編が情熱と甘美さと幸福感に包まれています。読んでこんなにも幸せになれる小説はめったにありません。登場人物もみな魅力的です。（個人的にはサンセヴェリーナ侯爵夫人が大好きです。）スタンダールはあえて、端的に言えば勧善懲悪的にキャラクターを設定しています。ストーリーは違いますが。とにかく何度読んでも、面白い！スタンダールは美文を嫌っていたのに、結果的に恐ろしくも美しい文章を書いてしまった。大岡昇平の訳も素晴らしい！

　あまりにあでやか、あまりに爽快、あまりにはかなく、あまりに透明。
　夢想はあまりに美しく、現実はあまりに退屈。
「1830年の冬……」というかの有名な書き出し、一見ただの歴史小説かと思わせて、その実、
主人公ファブリス・デル・ドンゴの純粋無垢たるや現実の人間存在をはるかに超え出て、
それでいて、いつしか入り込まずにはいられないその魅力――
　もはやことばを重ねるだけ野暮というもの。とにかく読まれたし。

　スタンダールの二大長編といえばもちろん『パルムの僧院』と『赤と黒』、あいにく誰の
書評かは忘れたが、各々の読者にとっての両者の優劣は読む順番によって決まる、
とのこと。
　私も同感である。
　前者を先に読んだものにとって後者はまだまだ完成度が低く、逆に後者を先に読んだものに
してみれば、おそらくはデジャヴュに支配されて、前者が焼き直しにしか思えないのでは
なかろうか。
　もし双方ともに未読の方がおられるのならば、私はもちろん、この『パルムの僧院』を先に
読まれることを勧める。
　日本語訳としては、この大岡訳が抜群。
