読書感想文などの推薦図書に推されている「車輪の下」よりもずっと入りやすく楽しめた本。ヘッセに憧れるきっかけを作ってくれた本でもあります。翻訳者の橋健二さんに手紙を書いたら、病床でありながらも、たどたどしい字でしっかりと返事を書いてくださって、今でも大切に座右の本（聖書）に挟んであります。戦時中の悩める若い読者に対して必ず返事を返していたというヘッセの精神を受け継いでいるおられる様子が、今でも色あせずに迫ってきます。平和と芸術と美を愛する心が純粋に心に響いてくる名作です。

ヘッセの作品というと『車輪の下』や『春の嵐』といった初期の青春小説ばかりが取り上げられるが、その実、ヘッセの真価が発揮されるのは『シッダールタ』以降であり、彼の文体・思想性の高みはこの『知と愛』をもって完全に結実する．

物語は修道院をとび出した愛の人ゴルトムントの放埓な人生を中心に幻想的なタッチで描き出され、彼の旅は修道院に残り謹厳な日々を生きた知の人ナルチスとの邂逅によって終りを告げる．
彼らの対照的な生涯はただ二人の人間のコントラストというだけでなく、知性と感性との鬩ぎ合いといった様相を呈し、ぶつかり合う二つの真理として光芒を煌めかせる．
果たしてヘッセは知の人であり、全篇を彩るゴルトムントの華やかな道程は実のところ作品の本旨ではない．そこに、この小説の妙味があるといえる．
およそ長きにわたって閑却されていたナルチスという人の思いは、語りの位置にあって読者とともにゴルトムントを見つめ続ける．ナルチスの迷いも、苦悩も、絶えずゴルトムントの人生に寄り添っているのである．
しかし、この小説はひとつの芸術としては曇りなく完成されていながらも、知性と感性の攻防という最大の問題を読者の心中に残したまま幕を下ろしてしまう．
ナルチスのなかで火を点した愛への求めは、後にヘッセ最後の長篇『ガラス玉演戯』へと導かれていく．

私の中で１位のこの本は、全くかたい話ではありません。むしろ、主人公（愛を示す）が愛を求めさまよう姿、生と愛、 もうひとりの主人公（知を示す）との友情が、とても感動的に描かれています。自分の道をまっすぐ純粋におそれもせずに生きて行くところにとてもひかれます。 二人ともがとても魅力的です。
