1947(昭和22)年、熊本生れ。少年時代から小説を書き始め、’71年「美亜へ贈る真珠」で作家デビュー。短編を中心に活動を続け、代表作は『地球はプレイン・ヨーグルト』(星雲賞受賞)、『未踏惑星キー・ラーゴ』(熊日文学賞受賞)、『サラマンダー殲滅』(日本SF大賞受賞)など。’96(平成8)年の『OKAGE』の大ヒットで、ファン層を一気に拡大した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

2.0 out of 5 stars ユーモアがブレンドされた、ドタバタホラー調ＳＦ, 2003/6/13
　母を癌で亡くした由井美果は、献身的な介護に感動し自らも看護婦となったのであった。彼女が勤務することになったのは、旧陸軍病院であったという培尾総合病院。その病院には、様々な怪異のうわさがあり、着任早々彼女もそれに遭遇することに…。

　夢野久作「ドグラ・マグラ」に比べるとずいぶんライト。内容も、パロディというほどでもなく、オカルト＆スプラッターでした。不定形の怪物に襲われ、溶かされる人体！というスプラッターは描写がアッサリしているので、ホラーフリークにはやや物足りないかもしれない。

　ガンガン人死にが出ますが、上手いこと悲惨になりすぎぬ読み味におさえ、ユーモラスな場面も多い
ので、ホラー風味付けのライトなＳＦとして楽しめると思う。一方、ドタバタとし!ていて重厚な雰囲気ではないところが不満でもある。

　光る球体、不定形の怪物というと、確かに解説で言われているとおりラヴクラフトの創造した邪神「ヨグ・ソトホート」を連想しますが、私は棘や肉柱、触手から竹河聖の「妖聖記」シリーズを思い出したりもしました…。

一気に読めたのだけど、少し軽い。ホラーというには怖さが少ないし、
ＳＦというには最後の部分が納得しにくい。一気に読めたということは
面白かったということなんだけど・・・・読後感が物足りないです。
アイディア、小道具、大道具などはとてもいいので、文体のせいかも
しれません。暗くならないというこの作者の長所が裏目に出た感じが
します。

個人的には楽しんで読みました。
やや人の命が軽く描かれてる感はあるが、
まあ一応ホラーである以上仕方ないでしょう。
某カップルのやりとりなどはコメディとしかいいようがないが、
それが物語に小気味よいテンポを与え、
おどろおどろしいホラーになりきらないように仕立てている。
それが本格ホラー志向の人には不満かもしれない。
だが僕はSF作品として楽しませてもらった。

ただ、ラストにはちょっと納得がいかない。
あれでは、ひとつの世界に同じ人間が２人いる、
という矛盾を生みそうな気がするのだが。
