1963年、東京生れ。3歳から25歳まで神戸に住む。関西学院大学法学部法律学科卒業後、会社勤務を経てフリー編集者兼ライターとして独立。「季刊子ども学」(ベネッセ教育研究所)では、子どもの逸脱や消費文化、異文化コミュニケーション、震災などに関する雑誌づくりに携わる。科学技術と人間の関係性、スポーツ、教育などをテーマに執筆活動を展開。著書に『絶対音感』(小学館ノンフィクション大賞)など(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

先ず、書名と内容に大きな隔たりがあり驚いてしまう。
星氏は未来を希望を込めて明るいものと想像し、その中で
エンターテインメント性を持たせるために未来の技術やデバイスを
悪用する未来人を登場させていると思うのだが、
最相さんの話はとにかく暗い方、暗い方へ突き進む。
読み進むうちにうんざりしてしまう。

未来はただ明るいだけであるはずは無いが、ウイットに富む星氏の
小説の考察であるなら、そこに孕む暗黒面についてももう少し面白おかしく
話を膨らませて欲しい。作者は本当に星氏の小説を楽しんだのか。
星氏の小説を利用して、自身の得意分野の取材で得た知識や持論を
これでもかと押し付けてくる。さすがに最相さんも少しまずさを
感じるのだろうか、その免罪符としての星夫人との対談。
星新一氏も草葉の陰で苦笑しているのではないだろうか。

今世紀は生命科学の世紀といわれているらしい。
クローン技術や遺伝子組み換え技術、臓器移植などの報道を見ていると、
なにか生命の根幹を揺るがす事態が起きているような不安に襲われることがある。

本書はこうした科学技術と向きあう現代を読み解くための手がかりを
星新一のショートショートに見いだそうとする試みである。
いわゆる星新一論、作家論ではないので、
そこを期待して読み始めた自分にとっては、星一つ減。

でも、読み進めるうちに、
なるほど星新一はこんなふうに読めるのかと思えてくる。
というより、私たちは今こんな物語を求めていたのではないか。
（「レンちゃんへ」や「たばこ天国」はとくにおもしろい）
週刊誌連載中は「星新一との対話」というタイトルだったという。
生命科学の現場を取材している著者だからこそ見出した視点であり、
本書のユニークさはそこにある。

星新一が医学者の中川米造と対談した『手当ての航跡』が紹介されているが、
医学関係者の多い家庭環境で育った星の科学的思考と同時に
科学では割り切れないものへのまなざしが
創作に与えた影響は小さくなかったのではないかと思えてくる。

星新一、再読のきっかけとなる好著だ。

星新一の作品は古びない。現代社会への警鐘になりうる作品も数多いのだ。筆者は毎回、星の作品のあらましを紹介しながら、そこから「今、目の前にある問題」に関する持論を発展させ、展開させていく。臓器移植問題、クローン問題、バイオテクノロジー、政治、戦争ｅｔｃ.本書はなかなか先へ読み進めていくことができなかった。立ち止まって考えさせられてしまう箇所が多いからだ。あるいは内省する時間が増えていく。筆者は結論をポンと放り出すのではなく、含みを持たせた文章を最後にさりげなく置く。デジタル的に０か１かで是非を問えるほど、世界が牧歌的に単純ではなく複雑化してしまっているからだろう。小学生時代に親しんだ星のショートショートを改めて読み直すきっかけを作ってくれる一冊でもある。
