同じ毎日新聞旧石器遺跡取材班による『発掘捏造』の後日談ともいうべき内容。副理事長の役職にあった藤村新一氏の捏造によって、東北旧石器文化研究所および周辺の関係機関、関係者がその後たどった経緯について記されている。

結局、古代史ブームに湧いた自治体は展示やサイトの掲載をとりやめ、東北旧石器文化研究所は解散。これまで数々の遺跡発掘で全国の自治体と古代史ファンを喜ばせてきた存在が消滅した。この本で明らかになったのは「日本の古代史研究は大きく後退した」ということ。日本には古代史研究に取り組む環境がまったく整備されていないことが問題点として指摘されている。文明の誕生は今から５０００年以上前。本格的な研究が始まってまだ２００年。日本人のルーツを知るためにも、今後日本の古代史研究が少しでもレベルアップしていくことを願ってやまない。
