読んでいて気持ちが重くなってくる。しかし、実際問題避けて通れない両親の介護の問題に対し、目を背けること無く、真正面から捕らえている。友人にも薦めたが、やはり人それぞれ、考えることがあったようだ。

　佐江衆一の名前は1970年代だったかに新進作家として新潮社から売り出されていたことを記憶するのみで、作品を読むのは今回が初めてである。
「黄落」とは、俳句の季語でもあり、季節は晩秋となる。著者と重なりそうな60年配の主人公夫婦の90歳代の両親介護の格闘の物語だ。もちろんドキュメントでなく小説であることを承知しながらも、とても身につまされる。
　老親の聞き分けのないボケぶり、下の世話には読んでいて気分が重たくなってくる。母の汚れた性器を息子が拭いてやるくだりが印象的だった。
　そして施設へのショートステイの場面。まるで転校生の紹介場面だ。まず、老親たちは初めての体験に抵抗を示す。それをなだめながら施設に入ると紹介の場面になるわけだが、やがて、かえって居心地のよさを感じるようになる。
　そんなものだろう。在宅より暮らすのにはずっと楽なはずなのに、なぜか初体験は腰が重くなる。
　前半は、老親たちのボケぶりへの主人公の狼狽もあってか、なかなか読むほうも辛く感じるが、母が気を利かせてか、拒食して自死していく。その後の老父の暴走ぶりが、後半、声を漏らして笑いたくなるような軽快な進展にうって変わる。
　何十年も連れ添ってきたというのに、結局お互い好きでもなかった夫婦の死に際の本音が辛い。
　しかし、ひたすら忍耐するばかりの母と違って、父の方は施設で知り合った老女と恋愛感情を生じさせる。
　主人公の妻からは「なんて不潔！」と嫌悪感を持たれる。男なら、つい許してやりたくなるものだ。父と息子、男同士の絆のようなものが、老人の恋愛にしぶとい熱を発しながら終局に向かっていく・・・。

現在、お年寄の要介護者は数百万人にのぼると言われる。確かに、中越地震の中継では圧倒的にお年寄が多かったし、親の実家に行けば数十世帯の集落に小学生が2人という若年層の少なさである。「高齢化社会」というタームは今や珍しいものではないが、いよいよ日本中がその言葉の重さをどっしりと背負わなければならない時代になっている。
介護の問題は、社会問題としての第三者的な視点でも捉えられるが、自分の親兄弟や配偶者が要介護者となった場合にどう対応していったらよいかという二人称的な問題が、恐らく最も現実的である。とはいえ、今一番考えておかなければならないのは、他ならぬ自分が年老いて要介護状態となった場合（なってからでは遅い、なることを想定した場合）、という一人称としての問題の捉え方であろう。
この作品で、上記に関しての具体的な解決法が出ているわけではない。しかし、要介護者が「いい人」もしくは「悪い人」だった場合、介護の負担が重い場合軽い場合、介護者の子供・嫁・兄弟・孫など彼らを取り巻く周囲の人間の立場と取り得る態度、自分が「老怪」となった場合の処し方、そういった様々のケースにある示唆を与えていると思う。
