1959(昭和34)年、高知県生れ、名古屋育ち。名古屋造形芸術短期大学卒。漫画家アシスタント、書店員を経て漫画家デビュー。その後、都筑道夫の小説講座に通って作家を目指し、『しゃばけ』で日本ファンタジーノベル大賞優秀賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

江戸の大店の病弱な跡取り息子、一太郎と
彼を過保護なまでに守る、妖怪の手代・仁吉と佐助たちが
活躍する、時代ファンタジー。
今回も引き続き、短編集。
五本入りです。

人にも妖怪にも嫌われる妖・狐者異が登場するほろにがいお話「こわい」、
以前登場した厚塗りの少女お雛さんと屏風のぞきがメインの「畳紙」
二人の手代が現れる前の、幼い一太郎と栄吉の冒険話「動く影」、
吉原の禿の足抜けを一太郎が手伝う「ありんすこく」、
大粒真珠の盗難と一人の鳴家のかわいい冒険の「おまけのこ」です。

「こわい」のお話の中で、佐助たちが栄吉を褒め、
一太郎がうらやましがる場面など、
一太郎が成長したがっている様がリアルに感じられました。
「ありんすこく」での活躍ぶりといい、とても甘やかされていても
自分の力で算段をつけられる一太郎が、すごくいいです。

小さいころの一太郎たちの冒険話や
屏風のぞきが活躍する話などの、イレギュラーなお話も
あたたかく、どこかリアルで切なく、しみじみ楽しめました。

本シリーズも４冊目の文庫化です。
シリーズも４作目にもなると、
読者も多少の飽きがくることはよくあることです。
本作はその点、畠中氏よく考えてくれてます。
栄吉や鳴家のエピソードが登場します。
ひとひねりが効いています。
「ああ、そういう手があったね」と頷いてしまいました。
飽きずに楽しく読み切れます。
可愛い話が多いんです。

一番のお勧めは、栄吉をストーリーの中心に据えた「こわい」。
栄吉に焦点が当たる話って、今までなかなかなかったですが、
ここでは「ええ！」と思わず感嘆します。
栄吉、いい味出してます。

「おまけのこ」は、
作風は変わってません。
でも登場人物の活躍ぶりが、多様になってます。
今まで読み続けてきた読者にとっては、面白い作品です。
そういう点で、ファンサービスが感じられます。

新しい読者は、「しゃばけ」からお読みになる方がいいなあと・・・。

しゃばけシリーズ第四巻目の、ファンタジックな時代短編集です。
巻頭に配されている「こわい」は、色々と含むところが多くて、唸らされました。
表題作「おまけのこ」は、冒険的ファンタジーで、躍動感があって、大変楽しいです。

シリーズは、それぞれが色々な方向性を持っており、ほのぼの系もあれば、現実的な話など、様々です。
しかし、あくまで確固とした現実感があった上での、ファンタジーであり、この独特な世界が味わい深いです。

こういう作品群では、個々の作品の内容そのものにも増して、しゃばけワールドに浸る事そのものが楽しみでもあります。
世知辛い世の中、しばし時と時代を忘れて、長崎屋の若だんなや妖達と遊ぶのも、良いものです。

特に本書は、何度繰り返し読んでも、飽きません。
一度浸ってしまうと、脱出不可能です。
