劉邦は英雄だが酒と女にめのない品のないオヤジで、項羽は戦争の天才だが大量殺戮を平然とおこなう無法者、この２名について司馬遼太郎さんの名著で読んだとき、どこかに救いはなかったのか、と真摯におもったことがある。

実は、真の「王者」がいた。

斉の国の王の末裔、この小説の主人公、田横である。男の中の男、爽快で、まっすぐで、ひたむきな武将である。この小説は最終巻までよまないと真の価値がわからないが、最終巻で、劉邦が田横に一目も二目もおいていた史実が紹介されるところは興味深い。人間としての器量が自分よりうえ、とわかっていたのでしょう。

これはしられざる史記の世界。しられざる、真の勇者、尊敬すべき男のものがたりである。血わき肉がおどる傑作です。

史記、「項羽と劉邦」、”四面楚歌”、三国志、古代中国。。。これらに感心のあるかたすべてにぜひとも読んでいただきたい、宮城谷文学の頂点のひとつです。順番に読んでいただけたら、最終巻、心の奥底から。。。私は感動して泣けました。お約束します。つよく、胸を打たれます。

「十八史略」、「史記」、司馬遼太郎の「項羽と劉邦」など、漢楚抗争をテーマとした史書や小説の中では脇役にすぎない田横が見事に描かれている。中国史の名脇役を選び、いきいきと描くという宮城谷昌光氏のうまさがよく出ている作品と思う。

難点をあげれば、非常に中途半端な恋愛模様（ストーリー展開上、必要性をほとんど感じなかった）や、田横があまりに理想的すぎる形で描かれているあたりか。

それでも、この時代の歴史を様々な観点から眺め、深く掘り下げてみたい人にはオススメの本である。

前漢建国前夜の、斉という国の王になる田横という人物の人生を描いた作品です。

宮城谷先生独特の生き生きとしたタッチが印象的で、その中に項羽・劉邦２人と彼らの配下と言った時代の寵児達も斉のサイドから描かれています。
史記の本道とは違った角度から英雄たちを見るのも面白いし、田横とその配下の生き方は「散る桜の美しさ」を集約しており、中国の歴史でありながら日本人にも受け入れやすいものだと思います。

ただ、あまり中国の歴史小説を読んだことがない人だと、まず最初に名前を覚えるのに苦労するかもしれません。
田氏が腐るほど出てきて、途中まで誰が誰かわからないかもしれないからです。
かくいう私もいまだに名前を覚えるのに苦労しています。

そういう方にはまず軽く史記の時代の概説書を読むか、宮城谷先生の「長城のかげ」という作品を先に読まれることをお薦めします。
「長城のかげ」は１冊に項羽と劉邦の時代のそれぞれの配下のエピソードが短編で数編あり、出てくる人物も限られるので、比較的読みやすく時代の雰囲気がつかめると思います。
