主人公・萄子婚約者の刑事・奥田が突然失踪。先輩刑事・韮山の娘で奥田に思いを寄せていた、のぶ子の惨殺体発見され、奥田は容疑者となる。東京オリンピック前後を時代背景に、真実を求め失踪した婚約者をおう萄子を描いたサスペンスの秀作。

萄子があまりにも自由にお金の心配をすることなく、いろいろな場所を行き来するという展開に若干の無理は感じるものの（金持ちすぎる！）、上下巻を一気に読まされるだけの内容はある。（「涙」するかどうかは別にして）

５才で終戦を迎え戦後の混乱期を経験しながらも、裕福な家庭で育った萄子は誇り高く汚れを知らない。そんなお嬢様が、生涯の伴侶に選んだのは無骨な刑事だった。しかし、挙式を数週間後に控えたある秋の日、世間が東京オリンピック開幕を前に沸き返るなか、花婿は謎の失踪を遂げる。

ミステリーでありながら、事件、災害、時事問題など数々の時代を彩る出来事が、サブストーリーとして見事に主人公たちと絡み合う。この１冊まるごとが昭和そのもののようである。
時代を共有した人たちには懐かしいものであるだろう。昭和の晩年しか知らない世代であるが、ＯＬがかつてＢＧと呼ばれていたことなど興味深く読んだ。

途中「涙」というタイトルに違和感を感じたものの、最後の数ページで思わぬ涙がこぼれ、腑に落ちた。おそらく萄子もあらゆる種類の涙を流したに違いない。

乃南作品としては、久々のヒット作。
結婚直前に姿を消した刑事。
何かの事件に巻き込まれているらしいその婚約者を必死で捜す資産家の娘。
その娘を優しく見守る兄の後輩。
自分の相棒だったはずの刑事に娘を殺されたベテラン刑事。
本当に失踪した刑事が犯人なのか？
読めば読むほど、どんどん物語に引き込まれてしまいます。

東京オリンピックのあったその時代が、あらゆる角度から克明に記されていて、その時代を生きた人ならば、それだけで胸が一杯になるでしょう。
せつない恋の物語・・・。
この展開、下巻ではどうなっていくのでしょう？
