順番は前後してしまうのだが、同じ音道貴子シリーズの『凍える牙』『鎖』という２本の長篇を読んでから、こちらを読んだ。

上に書いた２本の長篇も確かに、刑事の日常が描かれているのだが、短篇集でるこの作品は更にその部分が強調された印象。
『凍える牙』でコンビを組んだ滝沢刑事が主人公の『茶碗酒』などは事件も起きず、まさに「日常」をそのままに描写したものであるし、他の音道貴子が主人公の５篇も事件は起きているのだが、トリックなどというよりも事件を通して犯人や貴子自身の日常へと思いが移っていく。

３００頁あまりの中に短篇６篇プラスおまけ、ということでかなり１話１話は短いのだが、読み応えは十分。

直木賞受賞作の「凍える牙」の刑事、音道貴子の短編集。「鎖」でもう一度貴子にハマって、順番こそ違うのだが本作も読んでみた。

　「あなたの匂い」では、貴子がゴミハンターの被害に遭う。貴子ならずとも私生活が除かれる感覚だろうからこんなことはたまったもんじゃない。ラストにはもう一度そう思わせる。

　「冬の軋み」では、親と子の話。結局親は何の為に子どもを育てているのだろうか。それが問題提起なのだろう。この話を読むと呆れてしまうが、まず単純にそう言うことを考えてみた。と言っても自分は育てられる側なのだが。親としては注目かな、と。最後の「雛の夜」にしても、安易に危険な行動に踏みいる女子高生達が描かれている。現実とのマッチがリアリティを出し、何とも言えない読後感と言ったところか。呆れるしかない。

　表題作「花散る頃の殺人」が個人的に一番好きである。ビジネスホテルで老夫婦の変死体が見つかった。自殺か他殺か。所持していた写真が意味するものとは。暗い過去が浮かび上がり、一人の男にたどり着く。よくある設定ではあるが、言ってしまえばこれも親と子がテーマなのだろうか。最後の男の台詞には何とも言えない後悔の念がある。

「長夜」はあまり好きでない。「茶碗酒」は「凍える牙」で貴子のパートナーを務めた滝沢刑事が主人公の殆どシナリオ性もなくすぐ読み終わる短編。しかしながら、滝沢らしい様が伺える上、読後感は何かとしっくりくるものがある。刑事がいかに忙しい仕事であるか。事件に休みがない限り、自分達にも休みはない。

　文庫化されていないが、音道貴子のもう一つの短編集、「未練」も早く読んでみたいと思わせた。

刑事物の短編集といえば、ただただギスギスしそうなものだが、これは「凍える牙」で活躍した音道貴子刑事が主人公だけに、女性らしい優しい手触りを感じられる。
特に大きな事件が展開するわけでもなく、どちらかといえば、淡々と音道の日常をつづっているのがいい。
人情話風だったり、シニカルだったり、中身もバラエティに富んでいます。
一連の音道貴子シリーズのファンならば、必読ですね。
