　典型的な男社会である警察組織の中でも、刑事という職域での女性は極立つらしい。音道貴子はレストランで起きた時限発火装置による殺人事件の捜査本部に配属され、男社会の権化のような滝沢とコンビを組むことになる。滝沢は小娘と行動を伴にしなければならない不運を嘆き、貴子を徹底的に無視し自分のペースで捜査を進めていく。貴子はそんな滝沢の態度ややり方に不満や怒りを覚えながらも微塵も表には出さず意地になって滝沢についていく。貴子たち捜査員の地道な捜査により事件の謎は少しずつ解き明かされ、やがて意外なものが実行犯として浮かび上がる。反目しあっていた貴子と滝沢はいつしかお互いを認め合うまでになる。

　男性中心の厳しい職場で働くヒロインの心情がリアルで共感できる。女性作家ならではであろう。また３０を越えたあたりの年齢の女性が公私にわたり抱える大小様々なトラブルに折り合いをつけながら懸命に生きる姿が読み手に勇気を与えてくれる。仕事に疲れた女性には一服の清涼剤になるであろう。動物好きなら神秘的な疾風にきっと魅せられるであろう。

　ただしミステリーとしては犯人側の視点があまりに少なく、動機や実行にいたるまでの過程などの掘り下げに物足りなさも感じた。

深夜のレストランで男が炎上するという衝撃的なプロローグから、最後までずっと飽きさせません。犯人を追跡する捜査の過程も面白いのですが、人物の丁寧な描写はさすがです。女性蔑視も甚だしい中年刑事滝沢とバツイチの女性刑事音道貴子のコンビ。普通なら、あからさまに「刑事の職場に女は必要ない」という態度を示す滝沢に女性なら誰しも腹を立てることでしょう。でもどこか憎めない。貴子もただ片意地はって男に負けるもんか、とイキガってる女性じゃない。二人に共通するのは刑事という仕事に対する真剣さでしょうか。最初は反発しあう二人ですが、次第に同士ともいうべき不思議な連帯感を抱いていきます。

なんといっても圧巻なのは、貴子がバイクで狼犬を追跡するシーンです。こっちまで深夜の高速を走っているような錯覚に陥りました。
余談ですが、私も狼犬を飼ってみたくなりました。これを読んで音道貴子のファンになった方は、「花散る頃の殺人」もあわせて読むことをおすすめします。

謎の殺人事件を描いた、「刑事モノ」だと思いいつつ読んだのですが、読み終わった後は涙がとまりませんでした。 主人公である孤独な女性刑事と、彼女と組む中年刑事滝沢。そして二人が追う獣との先に待つ悲しく純粋なそれぞれの愛の結末は、私達に静かな感動をもたらせてくれると思います。 「推理小説はニガテ」という方にもゼヒおすすめの作品です。
