……死(しに) の御使(みつかひ)、烏羽玉(うばたま)の美酒(うまき) をもちて寄り来(く)とも、
その日、汝(なれ)そをくちに受け、たぢろぐなゆめ。

本文の引用、十一世紀ペルシアの科学者オマル・ハイヤームの書いた四行詩の数々「ルバイヤート」の一節。

この詩はまさに主人公の生き様を表しているようです。
主人公はなによりも「うまい酒」を愛し、そして「酔い」に生きます。

何年も前に読んだ本で、殆ど全く本屋さんではみかけなかったのですがAmazonにあったのでお奨めしておきます。
内容については読んでからのおたのしみということで詳しくは書きませんが、世間からみるとぐうたらな男が、あ れやこれやという内にとんでもない危機に面しちゃいます。そしてその男を中心に色々な人物（？）が動きだします。ラストの展開は他の小説じゃありえない！

世界各国の神話、伝説、詩、歴史、伝統、人物、そして酒。
それはもう色々な要素が主人公を中心に旋律を奏でます。

この世界観の広さ、深さは「百億の昼と千億の夜」 光瀬 龍 (著)に通ずるものがあります。このような物語を書くにはどのくらいの資料が必要なのか想像もできません。しかもそれら全ての要素をとても美しく絡み合わせていくセンス、もう人間技じゃありません。まさに仙人。ただ「酒仙」と「百億の昼~」がちがうのは、その方向性。非常にハードな「百億の昼~」に比べ、「酒仙」は底抜けに楽観的！読めば読むほど気持ちよく酔える本なんです。お酒が飲めない人でもきっとそういう気分になるでしょう。

最後まで読み終えた時のなんともいえない幸せな読後感は、まるで酔いにまかせた夢心地のような、心の底からいい気持ちになれる本です！

　1993年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　著者は英文学者・翻訳家。
　本書は、第５回ファンタジーノベル大賞優秀賞を受賞した作品。
　なんというか、不思議な物語である。ベースとなっているのは、中国の『三国志演義』とか志怪小説とかのノリであろう。突拍子もないアイデア、ひょうひょうとした雰囲気。勧善懲悪。凄い酒の量。
　私は酒は飲めないので、酒の楽しさとは無縁に生きている。しかし、本書のような小説を読むと、酒ってこんなに楽しいものなのか、と羨ましく思えてくる。残念。
　ファンタジーとはちょっと違うが、変な話が好きな人におすすめ。

極上の酒肴。読んでいるだけで心がうきうきして酔っ払ってきそう。この本を読んでそんな気分になれたら、あなたも酒飲みの資格十分。
