時計館を読む前に、こちらを読んでおこうと思い手にとった
のですが、私にとってその内容はあまりにも深くて「綾辻さん、
なんてすごい本を書いたんだ・・」と驚愕しました。

綾辻氏はしばしば「ミステリーを書く上で雰囲気はとても重要」
だと述べられています。
本作はそれを如実に形にしたようなもの。重厚で厳かで幻想的で、

「霧越邸」という名がとてもよく似合う館が舞台です。
お得意のどんでん返しはもちろん用意してありますが、この物語で
何よりもその魅力となるのは、やっぱり前編を通して感じられる
独特の「雰囲気」でしょう。

事件解決後も、「霧越邸」にまつわる謎は明らかにはされません。
深い余韻を残して、物語は終わりを告げます。

この作品を読む事ができて、よかったです。

綾辻さんの著書は全部読んでます。
その中で、この「霧越邸」は、非常に描写が美しいです。

綾辻さん、本人は、「人間性が書けてない」とか
何かの本で読みましたが、
この作品は、人より、風景というか雰囲気というか、
自分がその場に居るような、そして、とても美しい
気分になれます。

私個人としては、描写的に、
「水車館」と同じくらい、綺麗な作品と思っています。

日本の古典ミステリの大作に中井英夫の「虚無への供物」がある。この本に影響された作家は多いが、綾辻行人は最も影響されている作家の一人である。この「霧越邸」は、（トリックも構成も全然違うにも関わらず）、「虚無への供物」の匂いを特に強く感じる。

雪の中にそびえたつ謎の館で起こる連続殺人。犯人は分かっても、人知を超えた謎は残ったまま終わる。再読しても、最初の霧越邸にはおそらく誰も辿りつけないだろう。 綾辻行人というと「館シリーズ」だが、この本はこのシリーズとは全く異なる異形の作品である。しかし、おそらく最高傑作の候補になる作品であると思う。
