北村 薫
1949(昭和24)年、埼玉県生れ。早稲田大学ではミステリ・クラブに所属。母校埼玉県立春日部高校で国語を教えるかたわら、’89(平成元)年「覆面作家」として『空飛ぶ馬』でデビュー。’91年『夜の蝉』で日本推理作家協会賞を受賞。’93年から執筆に専念。読書家、本格推理ファンとして、評論、アンソロジーにも腕をふるっている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

語るのはシャハラザードではなく、17人の女性たち。

短編集なので、気の向くままに読めるのも良い。

こんな男性とのやりとり、ステキだなぁと思う「笑顔」、
読んだ後も余韻の残る不思議な「眠れる森」、
国語の教科書を思い出す美しい文章と
父親とのやりとりが印象的な「夏の日々」などなど。
心に残るものが多い。

いつでも、彼の文章、
そして登場人物には清純な印象を受ける。
年齢を感じさせない、かわいらしい魅力的な女性のお話を聞きたい方はお試しあれ。

　2004年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　17篇の短編が収められている。
　『アラビアン・ナイト』の形式をもじり、「女」が次々と不思議な話を語っていく。ただし、「女」はひとりではなく、色々な「語り女」が登場する。
　話の内容はさまざま。「メロス」を茶化したようなものから、不気味な人形の話、柔らかで幸せな結末を迎えるものと、それぞれに味わいが異なる。不思議だったり異常だったりする話ばかりで、いかにも北村氏っぽい一冊であった。
　17篇のうち、面白かったのは三分の一ほど。

語るは女性。日常生活でありながら不思議な世界へいざなう。

物語はスパッと確信を切り取られ、
無駄なくそつなく物語を楽しませてくれる。
