「とっても面白かったので、あげます。１７才のあなたはどういう感想をもつのか…？」
ある日、机の上に母からの置手紙と共に置かれていたのが、この本でした。
私たちは常に心にふさわしい体で生きているものだと思います。

それが、この本の主人公のように、もし２５年もの歳月をスキップしてしまったら、心と体がかみ合わない″自分″を生きていかなくてはならないとしたら…。
始終そんなことを思いながら読んでいました。
読み終わった私の心に残ったのは、不思議な爽快感。
人は、いくつになったって、若い頃と同じように、すべてのものに様々な思いを抱けるのだと。

母は、果たしてどのようなことを思ったのでしょうか。

大好きな北村さんの本の中でも誰かに一番はどれと聞かれたら、間違いなくコレを押します。ストーリーは、非日常的なのに、最後まで違和感なく読んでしまいます。若いはずの自分の”中年”の自分に対する違和感といらだちは不思議じゃなく共感できたし、ラストシーンの両親に対する言葉は涙が出てしまいました。北村さんの本を読んでいるといつも自分の学生時代を思い出してしまいます。早く卒業したくてたまらなかったはずの学生時代がすごく大切な時間だったのだときづかさせられます。

この本の重要な主題は「自尊心」である。運命のいたずらによって環境の激変にさらされたものが、どのようにして自尊心を維持するか、それを17歳（であった）娘さんの目を通して描いたものである。主人公が女子高生（と女性教師）であることから、おそらく読者の男女比は圧倒的に女性が多いものと想像する。しかし、主題そのものは普遍的であり、だれが読んでも緻密な構成と品格のある描写に胸打たれることだろう。ひとつだけ、筆者が好きな場面をあげたい。ひとりの女子生徒が部活をやめたいと顧問の教師に打ち明ける。「おまえからバレーを取ったら何が残る」と訊かれ、その子はとっさに「私が残ります」と言い返す。そしてぶたれる。
多くのものを奪い取られていくのが生の定めであるとするならば、それでもなお「私は残る」と静かに言い切る力を養いたい。この本は、バブルを通過し、そしてそれによって損なわれることのもっとも少なかった精神によって生み出された稀有な傑作である。
