料理屋のひとり娘「おりん」とその料理屋に憑く亡者たちとの交流を通して、人の命の儚さや業の深さを描いた時代小説。
上下巻におよぶ長編小説ながら、読みやすい文章とミステリアスな展開とによって、最後まで飽きることなく楽しめる作品だった。
一軒の料理屋とその周辺という限られた範囲内で繰り広げられる話ながら、欲に取り込まれる弱さや逆境にも打ち勝つ強さといった、人の二面性を示して見せるなど、著者が作品に託したテーマは大きい。
素直で健気な主人公おりんのほか、亡者ではあるが、磊落な気質の「玄之介」、気の優しい「おみつ」、気難しい「笑い坊」など、作中人物の造形は多彩に描き分けられており、それぞれが魅力的な個性を持っている。
古風な言い回しや風俗には、作品の流れを壊さない程度のさりげなさで注釈が入れられており、時代小説にそれほど親しくない人でも、作品世界にすんなりと入っていけるよう配慮もされている。

ほぼ、2日間で読破でき、非常に読みやすく、長さは感じませんでした。この物語では、普通の人間でもお化けとのあいだに似たようなものがある場合、おばけが見える設定です。多くの人は、同じ痛みを経験して、はじめて他人の痛みがわかる人間になっていくのかと思います。この本を読んでいると、利己的で他人の痛みのわからない人間は亡者と同じで、かわいそうな存在であると思えてきます。主人公のおりんのように他人の痛みのわかる人間になりたいと思うものです。
また、幽霊の玄之助の次の台詞が印象的でした。“おまえ（おりん）の父親は、きっちりと真面目な男のようだが、どうも縫い代が浅いようだ。布の質も仕立ても悪いが縫い代だけはたっぷりある俺のような男の見立てだから、これは確かだ。あんなふうに始終キリキリとしていては、すぐにほつれてしまうだろうな。”こころに余裕のない現代人が学ばなければならない姿勢と思いました。

宮部さんの作品はその多さの割りにはそれほど読んでいない部類だとは思うが、これはかなり満足できた作品でした。巧みな人物造形で描き分けながら、その底流にある人間肯定の姿勢が終盤でより濃く出ていたと思います。

「お化け」なんてスーパーナチュラルな存在ですが、この世に未練を残して死んでいった者だからこそ、より深い人間性を描くことが出来たのだと思いました。

擬古文調の語り口も現代文と差が無いほど理解しやすいうえに、江戸情緒を満喫させてくれました。

ぜひ、人の業の哀しさと、それを包む人情の温かさをこの作品で味わってください。
