「火車」「理由はいらない」とならぶ、宮部氏の代表作。
個人的には、この三作品のなかで、一番好きな作品である。
若い女性を狙った連続バラバラ殺人という猟奇的な事件、マスコミを利用した劇場型犯罪をメインに据え（作者独特の文体ゆえ、怖さはない）、犯人や被害者のみならず、被害者の家族、加害者の家族、事件を報道する側等の視点から作品を展開している。単なる「謎解きの」ミステリーの枠に留まらず、現代社会がかかえる「闇」を描き出すことに成功しているところが、この作品が高く評価される所以だろう。

この事件から10年後の前畑滋子を主人公にしたスピンオフ作品が2005年夏から2006年夏に新聞に連載されており（新聞紙上のタイトルは「楽園」）出版が待たれるところである。

5.0 out of 5 stars 事件に巻き込まれた人々の関わりをもとに､人殺しの残酷な本質を見事に描いた1冊, 2006/4/17
第2､3巻では､いかれた連中の異常心理が延々と描かれました｡ですから､本巻から私の好きな登場人物が再度登場してくれたことを有難く思います｡一生癒されない傷を負った犯罪被害者の内面は確かに重い描写ですが､連続殺人犯の異常心理の描写に比べると､私のようにサイコ物が嫌いな読者には気分的に大分助かります｡
第4巻は､前巻まで接点がなかった事件関係者たちが､互いに関わり始める過程を描いています｡塚田真一と有馬義男の出会いのように､登場人物同士が強い絆を育む場面は非常に印象的でしたが､私の心には､むしろ登場人物同士が､対立し､傷つけ合う場面の方が強く焼き付いています｡心に残る場面の１つは､被害者の父親が高井由美子を殴り付ける場面｡兄の無実を晴らそうとする妹の気持ちも､娘の仇を討とうとする父親の気持ちも､痛いほど理解できます｡罪のない人間同士が憎しみをぶつけ､傷つけ合う｡人殺しという犯罪がもたらす最も残酷な本質が､この場面では見事に描かれています｡もう１つは､前畑滋子が有馬義男に問い詰められる場面｡私自身はこの滋子を余り好きにはなれないのですが､ルポを書く彼女の立場は､作家の宮部さんに非常に近いかもしれません｡犯罪被害者の気持ちとどう向き合い､どのようにルポを書くべきか｡滋子の苦闘振りを通して､宮部さん自身の心の葛藤が読者に伝わるようにも感じられます｡
逆に嫌いな場面は､凶悪な主犯であるピースと､事件に巻きこまれた人たちが接触する場面｡ここで初めてピースの実名が明かされる訳ですが､彼の陰湿極まりない行動は､彼の内面が本巻で全く描かれない分､非常に気持ち悪い｡多くの人が傷つく中で､本当に悪い奴は何の罪悪感も覚えず､逆に皆から慕われ､尊敬すら集める｡事件に巻き込まれた人々の心の描写を元に､殺人の不条理な側面が本巻では見事に描かれています｡

文庫全５巻の中で、偶数巻は読むのがつらい。
心情的につらいのではなく、単純に読む作業がつらい。

作者はそれまでの事実を、別視点から（ゆえ）に否定するよう論理的に書いている。
しかし、当然ながら読み手にはそれが間違いであることはわかっている。
だからつらい。

作者のメッセージを読み取る事もできるとは思うが、単純に話としたならば、スピード感が鈍化している。
かといって社会的メッセージなどが強いかと言えば、決してそれ程でもないと思う。

冗長・・・というのが正直な所。
