「火車」「理由はいらない」とならぶ、宮部氏の代表作。
個人的には、この三作品のなかで、一番好きな作品である。
若い女性を狙った連続バラバラ殺人という猟奇的な事件、マスコミを利用した劇場型犯罪をメインに据え（作者独特の文体ゆえ、怖さはない）、犯人や被害者のみならず、被害者の家族、加害者の家族、事件を報道する側等の視点から作品を展開している。単なる「謎解きの」ミステリーの枠に留まらず、現代社会がかかえる「闇」を描き出すことに成功しているところが、この作品が高く評価される所以だろう。

この事件から10年後の前畑滋子を主人公にしたスピンオフ作品が2005年夏から2006年夏に新聞に連載されており（新聞紙上のタイトルは「楽園」）出版が待たれるところである。

5.0 out of 5 stars 虐げられ続けた人間が持つ強さや優しさがいつまでも心に残る1冊, 2006/4/17
第1巻の巻末でわずかに描かれた､犯人と思われる若者2人の事故死｡2人のうち高井和明が無実であることは､第2巻の前半で既に分かっています｡ではなぜ彼が栗橋とあのような形で､一緒に死ぬことになったのか､本巻ではそれらが全て明かされます｡
第2巻では､事件の従犯である栗橋が､殺人に手を染める過程が描かれました｡第3巻では､主犯のピースとともに快楽殺人を演出し､被害者遺族やマスコミにゲームを仕掛ける彼の内面が描かれます｡被害者や遺族の気持ちを弄んで人殺しに耽る2人組の卑劣なやり口は勿論､第2巻同様延々と描かれる殺人鬼の病的な内面も､宮部さんの文章が巧い分尚更気持ちが悪い｡無実の人間が巧妙な罠に嵌められる過程にも吐き気を覚えますし､本巻も第2巻同様､本書の中で私が嫌いな巻の1つ｡しかし第2巻と違い､高井和明の内面の描写が盛り込まれた分､本巻には心に強く残る場面が数多くあります｡
表面的には鈍重でひ弱に見える和明が､巻末で見せる意志の強さ｡彼の必死の訴えは､連続殺人に耽るピースや栗橋の傲慢さを､木端微塵に粉砕する力を持っています｡巻末では和明の生い立ちも描かれますが､虐げられ､苦しめられ続けた人間が､その過程で優しさや強さを培う描写は､外見では判断できない人間の本質を見事に捉えており､それを活き活きと描き切る宮部さんの文章の真髄が感じられます｡犯行を止めさせようと､和明が涙を流しながら栗橋に懇願する場面､炎上しながら車が転落する場面､死ぬ前に2人の頭を駆け巡る無数の思い出｡抑えた筆致で描かれる些細な1つ1つの描写が､今も私の心に焼き付いています｡恐らく一生忘れられない描写だと思います｡
巻末までの経緯が非常に気分の悪い1冊ですが､最期まで虐げられながらも懸命に生き続けた和明の哀しい姿が印象的だったので､前巻より評価を上げたいと思います｡

待ちに待った文庫化。
連続殺人犯と、それに挑む一人の老人と、捨てられた腕の第一発見者の少年との戦いを描いています。
２人はどう、犯人を追い詰めていくのか…。

前に映画を見て「こんなもんか」とがっかりしたのですが、読んでみると映画とは全然違って、より深いです。

ミステリですが、それよりもこの話は被害者家族の心境にスポットを当てて、こと細かく丁寧に描いています。その苛立ちや悲しさがヒシヒシと伝わってきます。

４，５巻は一ヶ月後の発売。待ち遠しいですね。
