「火車」「理由はいらない」とならぶ、宮部氏の代表作。
個人的には、この三作品のなかで、一番好きな作品である。
若い女性を狙った連続バラバラ殺人という猟奇的な事件、マスコミを利用した劇場型犯罪をメインに据え（作者独特の文体ゆえ、怖さはない）、犯人や被害者のみならず、被害者の家族、加害者の家族、事件を報道する側等の視点から作品を展開している。単なる「謎解きの」ミステリーの枠に留まらず、現代社会がかかえる「闇」を描き出すことに成功しているところが、この作品が高く評価される所以だろう。

この事件から10年後の前畑滋子を主人公にしたスピンオフ作品が2005年夏から2006年夏に新聞に連載されており（新聞紙上のタイトルは「楽園」）出版が待たれるところである。

4.0 out of 5 stars 全巻の中で最も気持ちの悪い１冊, 2006/4/17
第1巻では､巻き込まれた人々の視点から殺人事件が描かれましたが､第2､3巻では同じ事件が殺人犯の視点から描いています。第1巻は文句なしに素晴らしいものでしたが､第2､3巻は私の好きな前巻の登場人物が一切登場せず､延々いかれた連中の異常心理が描かれるので､途中で何度も投げ出したくなるほどに気持ち悪い｡後から考えれば､事件の全体像や結末への流れは分かり易くなり､被害者たちへの理解にもつながるので､第2､3巻にも十分意味はあります｡同じ事件を2度描くことへの批判もありますが､事件に巻き込まれ､人生を破壊される人たちと､凶悪事件を引き起こし､他人の人生を破壊する人でなしは､同じ土俵で描くべきではないでしょう｡しかし､それらを差し引いても､第2､3巻はできる限り思い出したくない､本書の中で非常に嫌いな巻です｡
第2､3巻では､2人組の犯人のうち､従犯の男の内面を描いています｡この男が殺人に手を染めるのは本巻の後半からですが､前半の歪み切った内面を見る限り､彼なら殺人にいつ手を染めてもおかしくはありません｡優しさや思いやりなどかけらもなく､平然と人を騙し､傷つけ､利用する｡少年時代のトラウマ等､確かに人格を歪ませる要素はありますが､それでもなぜこれほど心のない人間になったのか､理解できません｡彼に理解など示すべきではないですし､宮部さんの文章も突き放すように冷淡なものです｡ただ一つ理解できるのは､彼がとことん見下げた人間であることだけです｡人間なら誰でも備えているはずの根本的な何かが､どうやらこの男には欠落しているようです｡
こういう最低の人間に限って､自尊心だけは強いものですが､彼の歪んだ自尊心を満たすように､パニックに陥った人々を描いた巻末も､平凡な語彙で見事に描かれてはいますが､その分後味が悪い｡いずれにせよ第2巻は､本書の中で最も嫌いな一冊です｡

グイグイと読ませるんですよね、この本。

被害者、被害者の家族、犯人、事件を追うジャーナリスト――。
読んでると、さまざまな人たちの人生が浮かび上がってくる。
重たいテーマにもかかわらず、何故か引き込まれてしまう本。

何かのｲﾝﾀﾋﾞｭｰで読んだけど、作者は「連続殺人」というテーマゆえに、
かなり悩んで葛藤しながらこの本を書いたらしい。
それだけ真剣に向き合って書いたってことが文章から伝わってくる。
たぶん二度と書けないんじゃないかってほど命を削って書かれた入魂の一作。

物語は三部構成で進みます。
被害者の遺族たち、犯人、そして、犯人を追うものたち。
それぞれのパートで、それぞれの立場からしか
明かされない事実が一つひとつ明らかになるにつれ、
物語の重層性が際立ってきます。

そして、人が殺される陰惨で、重たいテーマの本にもかかわらず、
この作品を読むと、一人ひとりの人間の人生の重さ、尊さみたいなものに
思いが致されるのです。

ちなみに、この本に出てくるｼﾞｬｰﾅﾘｽﾄ前畑滋子の後日譚
「楽園」という作品がいま、産経新聞で連載されてます。
