時代物作家、宮部みゆきが江戸時代のコンセプトに従って平成の世を徒歩で歩きまくる！という企画の本です。忠臣蔵の吉良を討ち取った帰り道や罪人が引き回しになった道をたどるなど、企画自体もかなり面白いです。
企画の中にコラムのように時代考証が（うんちくですね）入っているんですが、この書き方が見事というか、押し付けがましくなくてとても好感がもてますし、非常に興味がわいてきます。オススメは流人を扱った八丈島の章。八丈島なんて三原山火山くらいしか知らなかったけれど、歴史に満ち満ちた島だったんですね。
読むのにそれほど時間もかからないし、梅雨時のお部屋でのすごし方にオススメの一冊です。

私は実は散歩好きです。
たぶん、本篇の主人公ミヤベさんと同じくらいです。
でも町にテーマを置いて歩いている私にとって、この本はとっても気軽なガイドブックになりました。
普段は気づかない町に息づく歴史に目を向けながら歩くのも楽しいに違いありません。

今年、八丈に行きましたが、この本に書いてあるようなことは露ほども頭に浮かんでいませんでした。
また行かなくちゃ。
そしてところどころに垣間見えるミヤベさんの人柄が私をさらに彼女のファンにさせるのでした。

ミステリー作家として、歴史小説家、それからＳＦ小説の顔を持つ宮部みゆきの異色のエッセイ。
突拍子もない企画、面白い文章で先にあげた作家とは違った一面を見せてくれるのは、ファンとにとってうれしい限り。
週刊新潮で半年周期で連載されていたものをまとめて１冊の本になるまで企画が続いたのは、それを待ち望む愛読者がいた証拠でもある。
晴れた日には思わず隊を組んで「お徒歩」してみたくなる、楽しい作品だった。
