上手な文章とは、できるだけ平易な言葉を連ねながら時として難解な単語をスパイスのように効かすものであるという。
辻仁成の文章は、その定義に当てはまる優れた文章力を備えていてページ数も多くはないが内容は濃い。
物語の舞台設定や構成も緻密に計算されており、読みながら思わず感嘆がもれるほどだった。

北海道の港町に暮らす函館少年刑務所の看守である主人公が、いよいよ青函連絡船の廃止が決定的になると生活への焦燥感と敗北感をもって別の世界を夢見る。
過去に同級生であり、陰湿な苛めの首謀者であった花井が収監されると、いっそう主人公のこころは動揺する。

苛めの体験からその後の人との関わりを優越で判断して過ごしてきた主人公は、懐疑的な性格を持つようになり心の奥には、暗闇に横たわる海峡の海ように重く哀しいものを抱えている。
主人公に唯一希望を与えるものは、海峡を渡る連絡船から見る町の灯火だったのかもしれない。

この作品は、第１１６回の芥川賞を柳美里の『家族シネマ』と分かち合っている。

また、この本の解説を『冷静と情熱の間』で共著（といえるか）した江國香織が寄せているのでそちらも読んでいただきたい。

　辻仁成の作品は｢冷静と情熱の間｣で読み始めましたが、芥川賞受賞作品であるこの｢海峡の光｣は、他の辻作品とも芥川賞受賞作品とも一味違った風格と深さを感じさせてくれました。
　舞台は函館のとある刑務所、そこで主人公は受刑者として現れたかつての同級生と出会います。優等生の影で残酷な人間性を持った彼の変化とそれに対する自らの心境が暗く淡々と描かれる世界観を、暗い海に投影しています。
　監視される立場と監視させる立場の2人を隔てる暗い暗い海の中に、一本の光を見出せるか否かの人間関係を深く描いた辻仁成の最高傑作だと思います。文章の運びや言葉では最近の作品の方が洗練されている感もありますが、読者に直に訴えて来る圧倒的な重々しさは他作品とは一味違った独特の深さを漂わせています。

殆ど文句のつけようはない。北国の自然を描いた描写は濃やかでどこまでも美しく、「私」の心理描写は人間の弱さをスリリングなまでに表現している。完成度の高さは、近年の芥川受賞作の白眉と言えよう。「ピアニシモ」以来地道に続けた作家活動の集大成だ。「サヨナライツカ」などで見せたストーリーの陳腐さは微塵もなく、正直よくぞここまで、と唸らせられる。作家辻仁成はここに極まった。
