1964(昭和39)年、東京生れ。日本大学芸術学部文芸学科卒。’87年「キッチン」で「海燕」新人文学賞、’88年単行本『キッチン』で泉鏡花文学賞、’89(平成元)年『TUGUMI』で山本周五郎賞をそれぞれ受賞。海外での評価も高く、イタリアのスカンノ賞、フェンディッシメ文学賞を受賞。『アムリタ(上・下)』(紫式部文学賞)など著書多数(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

この本を読んだ時に一番驚いたのは、すごいお父さんだなぁと思った事。そしてすごいお母さんだなぁ･･とも。こうゆう親に育てられたら、今まで一度も会ったことが無くても出会った瞬間にわかってしまうんだなと・・。二人が惹かれあっていくところもとても素敵で、何とか上手くいきますようにと思わず祈ってしまいました。
サンクチュアリもこれだけで一冊にしても良い位、とても素敵なお話なのでぜひぜひお勧めします。

嘘のようなホントの話という言葉があるが、
この本はそれとは真逆な感じがした。

ありそうで、ない。
そんな感じのする２話だった。

この２作は、設定が身近であり、非常に親近感を覚えやすい。
その上、ばななさんの文章が読みやすいだけに、あっという間に
話の中に引き込まれている感がある。

だが、読み終わってみると、「あるある」とはお世辞にも言えない。
決して自分ではできない体験を、小説を通してできた気がする
だけである。まるで自分のことのように。

そこが、この小説（作家）の優れている所だと思う。
本を読んでいるその瞬間だけは別世界。
そう思わせる話だった。

サガンが、ベストセラー処女作「悲しみよこんにちは」に続く第二作を書いたその後書きで「世間がマシンガンを構えて私を待ち構えているのが解るわ。」
と、書いていました。
吉本ばななにとっては、大ベストセラーとなった処女作の「キッチン」に続く、世間にマシンガンを構えて待ち受けされていたところに放たれた作品が、この一冊です。
著者自身もかなり意識した様子ですが、文庫にも採録されている「単行本のあとがき」で「私の2冊目の本は、勢い大爆発！ 作家が自らの命をけずって描いた超力作……という感じではなくて・・・」と
特に前作を意識して肩に力が入った様子がなく、著者の持ち味が良い方向に発揮されていると感じました。
「うたかた」では身近な人を理解していく長い道程が著者独特のタッチで描かれていて好感が持てるし、
「サンクチュアリ」では懐かしい夜の風景が眼前に現れて、思わず休みを取ってどこかの海辺の旅館に滞在したくなる旅情が瑞々しく描かれています。
