あの本のサイズ（厚み）からは、推し量れない内容の濃さ…
戦中・戦後・現代への移り変わりを、作者の生い立ちを
通して眺めることができる。
中でも、戦時中の出兵話は必読すべき…
しかし、あの悲惨な時代を水木さんが書くと
不謹慎ながらも笑ってしまうのだが、
なにげなく書かれた一文からも、戦争の悲惨さを
感じることが出来る。

死することが必至である特攻隊の隊員達が
出兵前にとった行動などに共通するものでは
哲学や聖書などに目を通す…
水木さんも例外ではなかった。
いずれのトピックにおいても、戦中・戦後の昭和における
生活風景…生きるためには食う…この当たり前の行為も
現代においてはなかなか意識されるものではないが、

この本を読めば、そんなあたりまえの行為すらも
大事に思えるのでは…ないだろうか…

受験に失敗した、
受験に成功したけどやることが無くて悩んでいる、
やりたいことがあってもやれない、
自信が無い、
もう人生が終わった、
精一杯、
自分だけ取り残されている、という人は今すぐに読むべきです。

冒頭から「落第の道がはじまっていた」と書いてある通り、水木先生の半生は壮絶なものだった。入学・退学のくり返しの末、鳥取の連隊に入り、決して生きては帰れないと言われた南洋の島・ラバウルに、しかも他の兵よりも三十メートルも前に立たされ敵に見つかったら先に…という状況下で必死に逃げ回り、ついに片手を失ってしまうもののその後で彼が見た美しき光景とは…。戦後になっても彼の壮絶な半生は終わらなかった。アパート経営から紙芝居、そして貸しマンガと、まさに坂道を上がったり下がったりをくり返すような生活の中でも彼はのほほんと生き続け、『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』や『河童の三平』などの名作を生み出していった。本作のオリジナルは78年のものなので、80年代以降の活躍(べにくじら)までは書かれていないが、これ一冊読むだけでお腹いっぱいになる。巻末のエッセイでも彼がどんなにユニークな人だったのかが分かるが、女性に支持されるというよりは男性に支持される事だろう。だが、女性が読んでも損はないので是非読んで欲しい。
