「カラス」「扉を開けて」「陽だまりの猫」三篇とも、救いがない。かろうじて、「陽だまりの猫」のみどりさんには、ほんの少し救いがあるかも知れない。どうしようもなく重く暗い日常。読んでいて、何度も沼に落ちていくような感覚を味わった。それは何故か。氏の作品に確かなリアリティがあるからだ。「流星ワゴン」のようには泣けない。どっしりと重い。それでもページを繰る手を止めることができなかった。自分は、どの主人公にも該当するように思った。氏のあとがきを読んで納得した。人間の底知れぬ精神の暗部を描いた秀逸な作品である。

きっと世の中のあちらこちらにあふれているだろうな…と思うような、目を背けたくなる暗い現実を淡々と描いていく短編が収録されている。
新しくマンションにやってきた家族に執拗ないじめを繰り返すことで、主婦たちはストレスを発散し、妻たちの行いに疑問を感じつつも、いじめがエスカレートするほどに活き活きしていく妻に喜ぶ夫…。
姑に嫌われ、旦那からも虐げられ、存在価値を見出せない嫁は、反撃に出ようと心に決め、息子を失った悲しみから立ち直れない夫婦は、その死を受け止められないがためにぎくしゃくしていく…。
人の心の奥にある“嫌な面”や抗えない苦しい現実を目の前に突きつけられたようで、いろいろと考えさせられた。モチーフが重く、精神的にこたえるので、読むのにはある程度の覚悟が必要。

あらかじめ断っておくが本書は暗い。
どんよりとした曇り空の下でストーリーが展開されてゆく気分である。
読後感もどんよりとした曇り空のよう。
平成１７年９月現在彼の書く小説は、澄み切った青空を思わせるものが多い。
しかし、本書があったがゆえに今があるのではないか。
その意味で原点と呼ぶにふさわしい小説である。
