この本でクルド人という民族を知り、中東情勢に興味を持つようになった。同じ地球上とは思えないような、過酷な世界の中で生きる事を宿命付けられた民族のドラマ。その中で彷徨する巡礼者という意味の名前を持つ二人の日本人。熱く、激しいドラマはやがて破滅的な終焉をむかえる。しかし人間たちのドラマも、彼らが信じる神々も、所詮は巨大な大地が創られた歴史の中ではほんの点でしかない。やがては全ては砂の中に埋もれていく。日本人離れした世界観の傑作。果たして船戸与一はこれを超える作品を書けるのだろうか？期待はしているが、難しいだろうなあ・・・

色々な意味で面白い。ハードボイルドな味わいもあり、心に迫る美しい描写・活写も多い。大袈裟に言えば、叙情的また叙事的な美しさというところか。登場人物の個性も魅力的。ただし、著者のいくつかの作品の特徴ではあるが、多少の歴史的背景を知っているとなお面白さが増すかも。歴史小説的なものもあるのでしょうね。これを勧めてくれた友人は少々マニアックな部分（銃などの武器関係の描写）について話していた。いろんな部分で楽しめるのか？とにかく、読んでみてくださいな。上下巻で結構分厚いが、長さを感じさせない。読み終わったときには心地良い脱力感があるでしょう。

　自分で言うのも恥ずかしいが、僕は国際社会に広く関心を持っている。そんな僕にとって、船戸与一氏は先生か、或はそれ以上の存在である。つまり、僕は氏のことをとても尊敬しているのだ。今から三年ほど前、僕が中学三年の時に始めて船戸与一氏の作品「血と夢」に出会って以来、今までに全作品とは言わないまでも、多くの作品を読んできた。

　その中で、僕が最も衝撃を受けた作品が、「砂のクロニクル」である。この作品は、パーレヴィ政権が崩壊した後のイランを舞台に暗躍する二人の日本人を主人公に添え、イラン秘密警察内部の抗争やクルド人による独立運動などが躍動感溢れる筆致で描かれている。船戸氏の作品に共通して存在する、綿密な取材に裏打ちされたリアリティーは、遠い僻地で行われている紛争を現実的かつ衝撃的に僕の目の前に突きつけてくる。その衝撃が、特にこの「砂のクロニクル」においては強烈だった。丁寧な人物・情景描写によって、作品に臨場感が生み出され、僕は読み進めて行く内にまるで自分がイランという行ったこともない国に立っているような錯覚を覚えた。魅力的な登場人物達のキャラクターによって、自ずと感情移入させられてしまう。引き付けられていると言うより、気付いたら感情が高ぶっている感覚だ。しかし、登場人物それぞれが胸に秘めた強い思いを最後に爆発させ、激しい戦闘の後、静かで儚い結末が訪れた時、僕は独りだけ取り残されてしまったような空虚感、そしてそれに相反する満足感が胸に押し寄せるのを感じた。フィクションとは解っていながら、過酷な状況の中で力強く存在する登場人物達の精神的な強靭さに、僕は脱帽せざるを得なかった。僕とは次元の違う世界で生きている人間達がいる。一人の人間として、彼らがどれだけ僕より強いか、親父に強く頭を殴られて思い知らされた気分だ。

　現在、中東は世界中の関心を集めている。しかし、僕達は、テレビを始めとするメディアの映像によって、その問題を表面的に理解しているに過ぎない。勿論、テレビで放送される映像は殆どの場合事実であり、小説というフィクションとは違う次元に存在する。しかし僕は、あえて主張したい。「砂のクロニクル」は一読に値する。この作品から得るものは非常に大きいはずだ。独り善がりかもしれないが、作品の登場人物達に感情移入し、内部から中東という地域を眺めた時、映像から得る以上の衝撃が心を打つはずである。
