江國さんの小説は、いつも、のぞきからくりを見ているような気持にさせる。汗をかかない人たちのような登場人物。

文庫の表紙の文字が可愛らしい刺繍で、それがとても似つかわしい感じ。

ハリーポッターは、自分が魔法使いだと知らずに暮らしていたけれど、この人たちは本当は妖精なのに気づいていないだけなのではないだろうか？

江國香織さん御自身と登場人物は微妙に合致する。彼女の紡ぐ世界には「雨」と「月」がよく顔を出す。登場人物もそれを眺めるのが好きだ。

江國さんがTVのトーク番組に出たときに語っておられた。彼女の家の習慣として、家族の誰かが雨に気づくと「雨よ」と声をかけ、皆それを見るのが習慣だったと。それから、彼女は果物が常食であるとも。

こどもの頃、雨を眺めると「心臓が抜け落ちた」ような、下半身が空っぽになったよう」な「すーんとする」心許ない気持になった。という記述を見て「雨」という名を犬につけるほど雨好きの彼女に納得がいった。「子供の頃、私は果物屋さんになりたいと思っていた。色とりどりの、さまざまな形の匂いのいい果物に囲まれて暮らせたらたのしいだろうと考えていた」そんな記述もある。下世話な世界で暮らしている私も、読んだ瞬間にそんな気分が味わえる。もう一つ好きだった描写がある。パチンコミツボシ前という停留所の名を、ハチミチコボシ前だと思い込んでいた…という話。それを聞いて微笑みながら「俺にもあるよ、そういうの」と答える恋人がまた素敵。

御伽噺のようで、でもバカバカしくなくて、どうしようもなく綺麗な空気を吸わせてくれる彼女の世界は誰も真似ができない。

そんなわけで、日常の雑事にまみれた我が身を忘れさせてくれる江國香織は、かぼちゃを馬車に変えてくれるような…女たちの魔法使いだと思った次第。

旅芸人、福尾野歩さんの文庫解説もとても素敵だった。彼女は気分を届けてくれる人っていう表現は大きく頷いた。

江國さんの本はどれも好きなのですが、この本は特に好きです。
　冬の寒い日に、こたつや毛布にくるまって暖かい幸せな時間の中で読みたい作品。何回読み直しても飽きません。ゆるゆる流れる時間がとても心地いいです。

数多い江國作品の中でも、この作品については
淡々としている、内容が薄い（無い）という批評をよく耳にする。
濃くて内容があって浮き沈みのある作品が読みたい人は、
そういう作品を探して読めばよい、と思う。
しかし。
上記のような批評も、最後はたいていが「それでも好き」
という言葉で締めくくられている気がする。

そのあたりが、なんとなく江國作品らしいな、という感じ？？

起伏に富んだ作品ではないが、静謐で、ほんのすこしあたたかで、
淡々とはしているけれどやっぱり幸福な物語だ。
私自身は、春先に降る、やわらかな針の雨みたいな読後感を覚えた。
とても好き。
