前半に「つめたいよるに」として9編、後半に「温かなお皿」として12編が、単純計算して1編あたり約10ページで収められている。そのどれもが読みやすく、読者は知らず知らずのうちに物語の世界に曳きこまれてゆく。

たくさんの奇想天外な世界と、人間の営みが織り成すさまざまな模様が、まさに「凝縮」されている感じ。前半は「夜」を題材としているだけあって、夢か現実か区別がつかないような不思議な世界が広がっている。後半は「お皿」ということで、料理や食事を通して、陰と陽、さまざまな人間模様にスポットがあてられている。

ひとつの本の中でいろんな人間になりかわって語っている。可愛がっていた犬のデュークを亡くしてしまった２１歳の女の子、卒業間近の小学生、幽霊の父を持つ少年、養老院のトキお婆ちゃんに会いに行くトキオ、いつかずっと昔、へびで、豚で、貝だったかもしれない恋人、ご飯を食べるのに二時間もかかるお翁さん、同じ団地に住む子供達・・・。

こうやって描くことができるから、小説はすてきなんだと思わせる。

友達の江國ファンから「超おすすめ！！！」と言われて買いました。
傑作なんだそうですね。確かに評価も高いようです。

この人は装飾過多系の文章を書く人なんですね。
装飾系と簡潔系に分けるのであれば、三島由紀夫と同じ仲間に入るかと思います。

私は三島は好きですが、江國ファンにはなれそうもないです。
文章ばかりきらきらしすぎていて、中味が感じられないというか。
好きな人には、このふわふわした頼りない感じがいいらしいですが
この人の文章って、かなり好き嫌いが分かれると思います。

私と同じ好みの人に聞くと、決まって江國は読めん！と言います。
