　「最近の若い人は漫画しか読まない」と　昔よく言われたものだ。携帯電話の進化と普及で最近は電車の中でも漫画すら読まなくなってきたのではないかと思うこのごろだが　これも年をとってきたせいかもしれない。

　その「漫画」というジャンルを考えるにあたり　つげ義春の作品をどこに位置づけるのかは極めて難しい気がする。僕も　つげの漫画を読むにあたって　「マンガを読んでいる」という意識はほとんどないからだ。正直に言うと「小説を読んでいる」という感覚が近い気がしている。
　勿論　その感覚は　「絵描き」としてのつげの芸術を否定するものではない。つげの書く絵は非常にユニークであり　まず　その絵から醸し出される雰囲気は　彼の作品を支配していることは確かだ。実際「無能の人」を活字の小説で読んでも　相当面白いと思うが　つげの絵がないことには　決定的に成立しないに決まっているからだ。カルトといえば　カルトだ。

　それにしても　こういう漫画家を擁した日本のコミック文化は　相当の奥行があると思う。「無能の人」が　映画化され　文庫化される文化は　お世辞抜きに大したものだと思う。

純文学的な匂いを感じる唯一無二の漫画作品で、
太宰治なんかが好きな人にはこみ上げるものがある筈。
とはいえ「人間失格」や「斜陽」の如きドラマチックさは皆無で、
ひたすら淡々とリアリスティックに社会からはみ出た漫画家一家が描かれる。
酒に溺れるでも女に走るでもない、妻や子供を殴るでも頭が悪いでもない、
中途半端にインテリで、生真面目で気弱な中年漫画家。
なのにやることなすこと裏目裏目、「自分で自分を駄目なほうに追い込む性格」と妻に評され、もはや父として夫としての尊厳は皆無。
いっそ酒や女に逃げられたらどれだけ救いがあろうと読者視点で思うのだけど、遊ぶ甲斐性も度胸もないのである。
徹頭徹尾、無能。鉄の牢獄のように救いがない。
それでも主人公の中年漫画家は諦めていない。無気力であるようで彼なりに必死なのかもしれない。
それは一点、妻子のためである。男の尊厳のためである。それがまた切ない。
戦争のない平和な日本で、それはきっといちばんリアルな手触りを持つ命がけの戦いである。はたからそうは見えなくとも。
その独特の哀感、男性諸氏ならきっと共感するところ大のはずだ。

「ねじ式」「紅い花」を読んだ印象とは違っていて当然です。この本はつげ義春のなかば自伝的とも言えるストーリーによって構成されているからです。貧しく無能の人、その暗くて生活リアリズム溢れる作品に、ちょっと気持ちが落ちこみそうになる私ですが、「ねじ式~」に収められている作品とはまた違った読後感を与えてくれます。

現代コミック文化で育った若い人に読んでもらいたいです。欲を言えば本書だけでつげ義春の漫画とはと思わずに、前述の「ねじ式」「紅い花」を是非とも読まれることをお勧めします。
