文句無く、鷺沢萠という作家の最高傑作。･･･に「なってしまった」。
「葉桜の日」「果実の舟を川に流して」ともに完成度は高い。
「川べりの道」から続く喪失感を、ナイーブな青年の目を通して
ポジティブに描いている。
たくさんの、生きることを真摯に捉えた言葉たちで溢れています。

　解説の通り、年齢を感じさせない作品である。この作品を当時二十一、二で書いたとはとても思えない。いや、老成しているとかじゃなくて。
　表題作がとにかく素晴らしい。典型的な自分探しの話。自分の出生も、自分の親が誰かも知れない、自分が誰だか、何処から来たのかわからない少年が主人公。漠然とした不安、自分の過去、あるいは拠り所のようなものを失ってしまいそうになる不安感と闘いながら、過去を模索し始める主人公の姿を通して物語は進む。暫定的に与えらた答えや、真実のことは明らかにしないほうがいいだろうが、やけにすがすがしい。

「葉桜の日」
わが子は見守りたい、けれど我が身も守りたい。そんなとき母親は子どもにどんなことをするのだろうか。
小説は、自分の人生の当初の記憶が定かでなくて、出生についてよくわからない、そんな青年を中心としたファミリーの物語だ。母親のことなんかあまりこだわらないようにしたいのだが、そういうわけにはいかない。一般的には出生の経緯などは親や親代わりの人が解決してくれるものだ。しかし、親代わりのような女性は出生の地を教えてくれはしたのだが、親らしい人はなかなか確定しない。青年は、母親は誰かなんてほのかな熱を抱いているだけで、それで終生通してもよかった。だが、出生の地に連れてこられ口火が切られると、もはやなにが何でも真実を究明せざるを得なくなった。
「俺の母親は誰だ」
もちろん、それが解決したら次の言葉は当然
「俺の父親は誰だ」
そして「俺の先祖にはどんなやつがいるのだ」
こんな望みは当面ぜいたくなことだろう。まずもって自分の母親が知りたい。
自分の子どもがこんな悩みを持つことになるのが分かってはいても、母親は正体を明かしたくないこともあるのだろうか。それはなぜだ？
力の入った作品である。



「果実の船を川に流して」
ただいま「キャリア教育」というものが世の中にはびこっている。クソくらえってな感じだが、自分の眼前に現れた男は大学をとにかく入って出たが、なにをしたらいいのか分からない。さしあたって東南アジアを一周してきた。これは小説ではなく現実なのだが、小説の主人公も同様で、帰国してからゲイバーのバーテンダーになった。
そしてママの世代のファッションリーダーだった男の発狂を知って、ママはとてつもなくうちひしがれる。
今どきの青年よ、ママみたいに、心の芯から支えてくれる人物はいるか？　簡単に怪しい教団のエロいカリスマにだまされないように、こんな人物を探求して見たらいかがであろうか？
