自信を持っておすすめいたします！私は現在、マウイ島に住んで１１年になります。

この本の９９ページから１２７ページ「タロイモ畑で捕まえて」に登場する人物や場所もよく知っていますし、よく会います。

著者の池沢夏樹さんは本当に、よく"本物のハワイ"を研究されていると感心いたしました。

ハワイの文化や風土、歴史を正確に伝えてくれようとしてくださっている「語り部的な本」だと思います。自然と生命に対する畏敬の念がわき出てくるような本です。ここまで詳しくハワイ文化を紹介した本は今までに読んだことがありませんでした。

この本を読んで、マウイという島に住んで、毎日、自然の恵みのなかにいられることを改めて感謝するようになりました。

どうぞ、"本物のハワイ"を感じてみたい方、ぜひ、「ハワイイ紀行」を読んでみてください！
また、ハワイに旅行されるときには、どうぞ、持参してください。
必ず、読んできて良かったと思いますよ。

　とにかく、著者のハワイへの愛情の深さが溢れんばかりに伝わってくる本だ。

　『ハワイイ紀行』というタイトルがつけられているが、内容的には紀行文というカテゴリーには全く収まりきらない。歴史・言語・カルチャー・地理学・地質学等アカデミックな内容満載であるのに、その内容は全く難しい印象を受けない。これは著者のハワイへの愛情と深い理解のたまものであろう。

　私は、４年前ハワイに初めて旅行したとき、どうしてこの本を知らなかったのか、今本当に後悔している。ガイドブックには載っていない「知りたかったこと」と「知っておくべきこと」が何故この本にここまで凝縮されているのかはまさに驚愕である。

　ハワイへの旅の前、旅の間、旅の後、全ての時のマストアイテムであると断言する。まずこの本を読め！

単なる観光者よりは踏み込んで、現地の人よりは一歩ひいてハワイイを見つめた、良質の紀行文。
踏み込んでいけば自然と、アメリカその他の白人侵略の悲しい歴史にぶち当たるわけで、そういう事を読者にさりげなく意識させながら、ハワイイの素晴らしい自然と文化を紹介している。
著者自身、侵略側が提供する快適な生活に身を置いている事は百も承知で、あえてそれを棚上げして侵略の歴史を説いている。
人間とはこういうものだ、と言って達観するよりははるかに清い姿勢であると思う。

圧巻はミッドウェイ諸島の章。著者が敬愛するJGバラードの世界観を思い起こさせる。
最終章でハワイイにある大型望遠鏡「すばる」を紹介しているが、「スティル・ライフ」の原点を見たような気がする。
