横山 秀夫
1957(昭和32)年、東京生れ。国際商科大学(現・東京国際大学)卒。上毛新聞社での12年間の記者生活を経て、作家として独立。’91(平成3)年、『ルパンの消息』がサントリーミステリー大賞佳作に選出される。’98年「陰の季節」で松本清張賞を受賞する。2000年、「動機」で日本推理作家協会賞を受賞。現在、最も注目されるミステリ作家のひとりである(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

文庫化されるのを待ちわびており、
期待度が高かったためか、
「ひりひり」度が「第三の時効」などと比べてやや低く、
星を４つとした。
もちろん、ほかの作者なら５つ星である。


私は、横山モノは名前買いするので、てっきり短編連作集（主人公が同じ）と思っていたが、
一話一話は完全に独立しているので、
名前買いする方は、ご注意を。

横山さんの短編は素晴らしいの一言に尽きます。一つ一つの長さが丁度良い。心理描写も台詞も多くは語らず。少し短い、物足りない、もっと読みたいと思わせます。かといってこれ以上長いと間延びするんだろうなあ。ギリギリのバランスでスパっと終わる、計算し尽くされた心地良さは熟練の成せる技ですね。
暖かい気持ちになれるもの、やりきれなさが残るもの、ニヤリとさせられるものと読後感に違いはあれど、クオリティの差はありません。捨て曲なしの名アルバムに出会ったような感じです。

横山秀夫は短編に限ります。
長編も悪くはありませんが、少ない頁数で畳み掛けるように主人公の危機的な立場や負の感情を描き出す手法は彼の真骨頂だと思います。

登場人物の背負っている重荷、苛立ち、劣等感、不遇感などが感情移入しやすいレベルの現実味を持って描かれています。

世間では『クライマーズ・ハイ』『出口のない海』『半落ち』などが代表作とされます。
けれど自分が唸ってしまうのは『第三の時効』『動機』そしてこの『看守眼』です！
