横山 秀夫
1957(昭和32)年、東京生れ。国際商科大学(現・東京国際大学)卒。上毛新聞社での12年間の記者生活を経て、作家として独立する。’91(平成3)年、『ルパンの消息』がサントリーミステリー大賞佳作に選出される。’98年「陰の季節」で松本清張賞を受賞する。2000年、「動機」で日本推理作家協会賞を受賞。現在、最も注目されるミステリ作家のひとりである(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

どの短編をとっても、一級品。
どれも甲乙つけがたい出来である。
「真相」では、出来不出来が激しかったが、本作は短編のお手本といっていい作品ばかりである。
横山秀夫の本を手に取ったことがない方にぜひ薦めたい。
この本が出された２００２年は、横山秀夫がまさに脂ののったときであろう。
こういう作者と同時代を生きている喜びをかみ締めている。

郊外の敷地に、庁舎、署長・次長官舎、署員宿舎、独身寮のすべてが揃って並ぶ三ツ鐘警察署。職住一体の息苦しさから「三ツ鐘村」と揶揄され、赴任先として嫌われるこの所轄署を舞台にした七篇が収められている。

私事だが、警察の署員宿舎の近くに住んでいたことがある。「三ツ鐘村」ほどではないにせよ、洗濯物の干し方、自転車の並べ方ひとつにも気を遣うような雰囲気があったのを覚えている。しかしこの短篇集は、そうした息苦しい特殊な環境のみに題材を求めることなく、その設定を時折ぴりりと効かせつつ、多彩な物語展開で楽しませてくれる。著者の他の短編より緊迫感が抑え気味で、派手さもないが、その分、肩の力を抜いて読める一冊だと思う。

ほろ苦さを含みつつも、それぞれに異なる読後感を残すことも印象深い。読む人によって、「好きな一篇」が分かれそうだ。

息詰まる緻密な心理描写が横山秀夫の特徴であり持ち味だが、この短編集でもそれはいかんなく発揮されていた。
ただ「真相」に見られたような救いのない息苦しさはなく、舌の上で苦い滋味を転がすような味わいのある作品集だった。
それは、どの作品にも、現場警察官のやるせない悲哀や苦悩を余すところなく描かれているにもかかわらず、ラストでは心の深いところで納得できるすがしさを感じることができたからだと思う。
