最も興味を惹いたのは、登場人物が持つそれぞれの過去である。主人公は、サラブレッドのオーナーであるが、サラブレッドを持った理由は、彼の会社が経営危機に陥って資金が不足し、どうしても落さなければならない手形があった。万策尽きた時に、ふらふらと競馬場に足を踏み入れ馬券を買った。そのおかげで会社は息をつないだ。最も印象に残ったシーンである。こういう思いで競馬場に来ている人もいるだろう。
主人公の娘。牧場経営者。サラブレッドに夢を賭ける牧場の息子。それぞれの人生が、一頭のサラブレッドを中心にして紡ぎあう。
都会の競馬場で行われる競馬と競走馬を生産し育てる北海道の人たちを対比させることで情感の豊かな作品になったと思う。

競馬の好きな方にはピッタリ。但し、馬券投資妙味ではなく、「馬のいる人生」を過ごしている方向きだと思う。馬事文化賞を受賞した作品。日本で本格的に競馬の世界を描いた作品は珍しいと思う。

本書に登場する北海道の小さな牧場の父と息子が強く心に残った。家族を、そして、馬をこよなく愛する父、そして、その思いを受け継ぐ息子。牧場で生まれた並はずれた力を持った競走馬を軸に、牧場の親子、競走馬のオーナーとなる会社経営者、その娘、調教師、騎手らの様々な人模様がつづられる。競馬に詳しくない人でも、楽しめ、感動できる１冊。

「優駿」が発表された当時、宮本輝さんも競馬もまったく知りませんでした。大人になり、馬に惹かれ競馬場へ足を運ぶようになってからも「優駿」が宮本輝さんの作品であることに気付かぬまま作品を読むこともなく年月がすぎました。

「優駿」を手にするまで長い年月がかかりましたが、競馬の世界の裏表を知ってから作品を読むことができほんとうによかったと思いました。馬や牧場のことを何も知らずに読んだら登場人物の悲哀をここまで深く理解することができたかどうかわかりません。もちろん、競馬のことなどまったくご存知ない方にも十分感動していただける宮本輝さんの傑作です。

読み終わったあと、感動のあまり出版社に感想文を送ってしまいました♪
