読み終えてから数日経っていますが、面白かったと思います。
人種差別、欲望、氏族間の思惑、アスラの存在がロタ王国の闇を浮き彫りにしていく。アスラを守ろうとするバルサに迫る陰謀。目が離せません。アスラを自分の少女時代と重ねてしまうバルサ。アスラに接する時のバルサは、お母さんみたい。ラストの切なさも印象的ですが、今後ロタ王国がどのような道を歩んでいくのか・・・気になってしょうがないです。
架空の物語なのに歴史小説を読んでいるような感覚になります。それがこのシリーズの面白いと感じる部分だと思う。

強大な力を持つ少女アスラ。
けれど普段の彼女は、綺麗なものや暖かなものに心を和ませ、
兄の身を案じ、不安を抱えるごく普通の心を抱いた少女です。
そんな少女に、身に抱いた強大な力は頼もしくあり、恐怖でもあります。
揺らぐ気持ちを抱えるアスラを、バルサは幼いころの自分を重ねて見守りながら
アスラを狙うロタ王国の呪術者たちの追手から逃れようとします。
しかしロタ王国の呪術者たちも一枚岩ではなく、それぞれの思惑が動き始め。。

上巻から予兆されていた、ロタ王国の上層部のうごめきが現れます。
自分を全能と考えて、人を駒のように動かそうとする人と
その計画も明らかになりますが
そんな人物すら単純に「悪」と言い切れない人物であるのが
この物語の魅力のひとつです。

上下巻で終わっていますが、アスラたちの今後が気になる終わり方でした。

　恐るべき圧制者になりかねないアスラの行く末を親身になって気遣うバルサとチキサ（アスラの兄）、タンダ（バルサの幼なじみの薬草師）がいる一方で、アスラの強大な力を利用しようとするシハナ（ロタ王国のカシャル＜猟犬＞の切れ者）のような人物がいる。それぞれの思い、思惑が交錯し、火花を散らす中、アスラはどういう道を選び取るか････と、ストーリーのあらましはこんな感じかな。

　崖っぷちに向かってぎりぎりと追い詰められていくアスラの心の葛藤とともに、彼女の姿に重ね合わせるようにかつての自分を振り返るバルサの回想シーン。大きな力を手にしたアスラが、バルサの横顔に心細げな色が浮かぶのを見て驚くそのシーン。胸にきゅっとしみるものがありました。

　また、ロタ王国のタルの民が、第一次世界大戦に負けて窮乏するドイツ国民に、少女アスラが、当時のドイツ国民の期待を一身に集めたナチスの総統に重なる印象を持ちました。アスラの力はそれくらい圧倒的なものであり、だからこそ余計に、アスラの運命を変えたバルサの勇気と決死の行動が輝くのでしょう。この辺りの作者の、物語をぐいぐいと運んでいく筆力、話を引き絞っていく展開力、キャラを立たせる描写力は、いつもながら凄かった。先の「来訪編」との２冊、一気に読んでしまいました。

　＜こうなったら、バルサやチャグムたちが、生きて行く道を、もう少し一緒に歩いてみようと思います。この物語、これからどう枝を広げ、どんな姿の樹になるのでしょうね＞（本単行本の巻末に記された作者のあとがきより）
