茂木 健一郎
1962(昭和37)年、東京生れ。脳科学者。ソニーコンピュータサイエンス研究所シニアリサーチャー。東京大学理学部、法学部卒業後、同大大学院物理学専攻課程を修了。理学博士。理化学研究所、英ケンブリッジ大学を経て現職。クオリア(意識のなかで立ち上がる、数量化できない微妙な質感)をキーワードとして、脳と心の関係を探求し続けている。2005(平成17)年、『脳と仮想』で小林秀雄賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

総じて面白いのだが、著者の言う「心を切り捨てた科学」というステレオタイプ的「科学」イメージが古臭く、非常に気になった。例えば、正真正銘の脳科学者・池谷裕二氏の研究などを見れば、現代の脳研究がそういう段階でない事は明白だと思うのだが。

まず、はじめに感じたのは、
小林秀雄の講演テープが聞きたくなったということ。

引用は多いのに、一番印象に残っているのは、小林秀雄です。
講演をうまく引用してあります。
著者は、この本の中で、これまで主観として科学の俎上にも上がらなかったことを
なんとかして科学、脳と結び付けようとする思いを語っている。
良い本だと思いました。

小林秀雄があまりに輝いているので、この著者の本より
残念ながら、小林秀雄の本をもっと読みたくなっちゃいました。
ということで、星をひとつ減らしときます。

本を読んでいる間、常にデジャビュならぬ既読感を持ち続けました。
どこかで読んだことのある思想を、もう一度とても分りやすいかたちで
文章にしている本です。オリジナリティがまるで感じられない。
仮想からいきなり魂になる持っていき方もよく分らない。
著者のものを考えるきっかけとなったらしいエピソードも、ひどく嘘っぽい感じ。
テレビのバラエティ番組でタレントに混じって出演している著者を見てびっくりしましたが、あんなものにも出るんですか、といっても、仮想論ですらすら説明されて、こちらのものを見る目を批判されそうです。でもねぇ。
