冒頭の一篇、「かわうそ」を読んで、圧倒された。
ほとんど気分が悪くなるほど、おそろしい。

定年をひかえた男が、連れ添った妻の裏面を垣間見る。
いままで知らなかった一面。
いや、うすうす気づいてはいたが、あえてふれなかった一面。
たわわに実る蜜柑の女。
機転の利く、というほどにウソのつける女。

男の立場で読むと、もう、どうしようもなく救いがない。
ひたすら気分が悪くなる。
女の立場で読むと、やはりリアリティーがあるのかなあ?
信じていたことと、裏切り。
それを追究するほど強くない男。
けっきょくのところ、女は強いのか・・。

といった、とりとめのない感想を抱きつつ、
妻にも読んでみてー、とすすめてみた。

短編と言うこともあって、非常に読みやすいです。そして読むと気付くのですが、どの話もちょうど良い分量です。そこに描かれる、市井の人々の人生の断面。短いながらも印象に残るエピソードの積み重ねが、どこか心に無理無く染み渡っていきます。どの話も2行も読めば、向田ワールドへすんなりとトリップさせられてしまいます。ケータイもメールも、現代的なものはまったく出てこないけど、古さを感じさせない、むしろすんなりと気持ちがわかるところ、人間の本質を鋭く描いている気がします。良く言われるように、一番恐いのは人間かも？と思わせるような、読めば読むほど深読みできるし、味も出てくる言葉の数々。宝箱を開けたような、短編集です。

十数年ぶりに読みました。初めて読んだのは中学の夏休みの読書感想文のためでしたが、今思えばよくこの本で感想文が書けたモンだと恥ずかしさでいっぱいです。あれから年月を重ねTV関係の仕事につきましたが、なんとそこは向田作品をいくつか手がけていたところだったんです。あと十数年早く入っていれば生前の向田さんに逢えたかと思うと残念でたまりません。ドラマの現場では、台詞の変更は一切認めなかったそうですが、それだけ脚本が完成されたものだったんですね。年齢を重ねるごとに行間に垣間見える“わび・さび”が変化すると思うのでまた何年かして読むとまた全然違った作品に映るかも知れませんね。
