若い頃のようなスピード感溢れる激しい恋愛ではなく、
終わりあること、変わり行くことを知っている大人の、
それだけになんとも表現しがたい感情が見事に描かれていると思う。
単に「別離」が悲しいことだとか、
「不倫」がうらぶれたいけないことだとか、
そういう二者択一的な価値観を持っている人には理解できないだろう。

入れ込みすぎると、きっとこういうものは逃げていってしまう。
感情の激しさと、文体の激しさとは別物なんだ。

十二の短編が詰まった短編集。これが、ビックリするくらい良かった。基本的に川上弘美はこの本で様々な人間関係について書いてるんだけど、それぞれの設定が細かで、生き生きとしていて、瑞々しくて、黙々としてたり飄々としてたり、不思議だったりして、それなのに自然で、本当に文章が巧い。
全体的に凄くバランスもいい。川上弘美の「良さ」が詰まった一冊だと思う。表題作へ向けての短編の配列の仕方も抜群！
昔「蛇を踏む」を読んだときにはうまく理解できない部分もあったように感じたんだけど、この短編では不可思議な物語も何故かすっと心に沁み入った。
表題作は、散文詩であると言っても過言ではないような、不思議な、短い短い短編。それこそ「良さ」を表現する筆力は十二分に持ち合わせている作者なのに、その「良さ」を敢えて単純に「いい」とだけ重ねて書いて無駄を省いていることで言葉が一層際立って見えた。（「寒いです。」のリフレインなども同様に。）
山田詠美の「風葬の教室」から言葉を借りると、まさに、物語を読んでいて「茫漠と広がる死の寝床」を感じた。その中で、歌のメロディーや“好きなひとを待つわたし”、なんていう人間の温かさが光彩を放っている、哀しい物語だった。

川上弘美の恋愛短編小説集。清純な恋愛ではなく同性愛だったり、不倫であったりと少々歪んだ恋愛がテーマになっている作品が多いのですが、川上弘美の作風なので、汚らわしさのようなものは微塵も感じさせません。

彼女の作品のほかに類を見ない独自性、そしてそれを文学として成立させている彼女の才能はもはや天才といって過言ではないと個人的に思ってます。「センセイの鞄」のような一般受けを狙ったともいえる作品も悪くないと思いますが、本作や「椰子椰子」のような作品こそ川上弘美の真骨頂ではないかと思います。恋愛小説は僕の興味の範囲から逸れますが、読む価値のある一冊であることは間違いないです。
