文学会に切り込む気負いと硬さは感じるが、読み方によっては堀田善衛を連想させるような非常に美しい文体であり、近代純文学に対する作者の親しみと愛情を感じる。
読み始めは純文学へのオマージュ的なものかと思ったのだが、読み進めるうちに徐々にそういう穿った見方は蒸留されてゆき、美しいものだけが残った。初期の習作としての要素も強いが、ひとつの到達点としても屹立している。
これ以降の平野作品もすぐれたものが多いが、日蝕のインパクトは忘れがたい。

他のレヴューでみなさんがおっしゃっていることですが、この方の文章はそんなにうまくないです。あくまでも「擬」古的。三島の擬古文とも天と地との差です。うがった見方をすれば、現代的な日本語が下手だからわざとそれっぽい表現でごまかしているのかもしれない。
ストーリーはすごくコンセプチュアルです。多分バタイユとか好きな人なんじゃないでしょうか。最近の芥川賞作家のなんとかひとみさんの作品よりはよっぽどバタイユ的です。僕の推測ですが、この人は小説を書く上で思想から入っているのではないでしょうか。なんでも思想に合わせるから、ストーリーの展開がほとんど力技になって、背景やら文章表現にもアラが出る。そのせいでなんだか物語に入っていけないような感じ。言わば読み心地が悪い。この感覚、何かに似てるなあ、と思ったら、ラース・フォン・トリアーの映画を観ているときの感覚と同じでした。内容は全然違いますけれど。
要するに、色んな意味でぎこちない。普段思想や純文学に触れない人には単にとっつきにくいだけの作品であり、思想や文章のエキスパートからすると物足りないし、鼻に付く。

但し、何を言っても現代の若手の作家の中では悪くないと思います。きっと頭の良い人なんだろうし。芥川賞は早すぎたと思いますけどね。三島ほどの美文は書けなくとも、ずっと小説を書き続ければ、十年後には真っ当な芥川賞作家になっているのではないでしょうか。一皮向けるとホームランを打ちそうなタイプなので、真摯に小説を書き続けて欲しいし、この先を追っていくのは面白い作家だと思います。

騙された。私はてっきり、正字正仮名で著されたものだと思い込んでいた。ただ徒に難しい漢字が乱用されているだけである。文体自体は現代仮名遣いであり、バランスが悪い。著者は中世ヨーロッパや幻想文学に詳しいのであろう。好んでその手の話を盛り込んでいるが、はっきり言って無意味な場合が多く、しかもくどい。詰め込みすぎである。「澁澤龍彦好きの田舎の文学青年が、勘違いして同人誌に投稿した作品」程度の出来である。

内容の陳腐さを難解な語彙と中世ヨーロッパ的意匠とで糊塗した姑息な作品といえる。ルックスの悪さを茶髪とピアスとブランド物のスーツで誤魔化している著者自身と重なり合う。皮肉である。
