日本の近代文学について、作家ごとにコンパクトに、しかも鋭くまとめられている。
吉本さんは、目もあまり見えなくなり、足腰もかなり厳しいが、アタマの中は相変わらずすばらしい。いや、肉体的な衰えが逆に精神に反作用しているのかもしれない。

内容から一人、宮沢賢治を紹介しよう。彼が国柱会に所属し熱烈な日蓮主義者だったことが取り上げられ、にもかかわらず作品は宗教的なプロパガンダになっていない。その意味ではプロレタリア文学が政治的プロパガンダになっていることと比べて、賢治のすばらしさであると書いている。
然り、である。
作家の写真も載っているのだが、印象的だったのが川端が映画｢伊豆の踊り子」のロケ中に吉永小百合を遠くから見ている感じの写真だ。自死した川端のことを思うと、なんとなく、とどかない｢美」にあこがれている感じがした。
吉本さんの長文はかなり難解だが、語りおろしで、かつ短いので、要点がピシッと決まっている。これを機会に、もう一度各作家の作品にあたってみたくなった。

すぐ文庫本になった。本の装丁は、単行本の時が優れていると思う。｢近代文学」らしくない、今度の装丁は。内容は、再度読んでみると、面白いし、もう一度昔読んだものを再読したくなるような導きの力が凄い。穏やかな語り口で、でも、結構自身の言いたいことは言っているところがいい。でも、選んだ作家は納得でも、選んだ作品はもうひとつで、ほかの作品の話が聞きたいと、思いもした。以前は「悲劇の解読」「書物の解体学」などでは、読んでみると、結構｢説得されて」我が意を得た、とか、なるほど、と感心したが、本書を読むと、そうでもない、というか、あたりまえだが、著者の感性は随分違うものだと思うようになった。小林秀雄でもそうだが、どうも作品論を読むと出来栄えの凄さは別にして、どうしてこの作品からそんなことを思うのか、不思議になることがままある。それがまた楽しい。

多くの読書論、読書術の類が出回っているが、いずれも読書を直接的に自らの出世やサバイバルの手段の一環として役立てようとするものだ。
教養などとは最早言うまい。本書は、少しでもものを考えよう、人間とは何かを考えようとする者にとって、参照できる格好の読書論であり、名著ガイドの役割を果たす。日本語で書かれた最良の文章による作物２４篇が、その作者の解説ともに紹介、味読ポイントが取り上げられている。日本語を母語とする者で、ここに出てくる作品を一つも読んでいないなどというのは、文系・理系を問わずおよそ読書家とはいえないし、まずこのような作品が書かれてあることを知ることが重要だ。人間を考える一番の近道は文学を読むことだ。
吉本は一貫して文芸評論家としての仕事を大切にしてきた思想家だと思う。そして、これはまた吉本隆明という戦後思想界の大物を知る格好の入門書でもある。

今年の４月に入社し、試用期間を無事に終えた新入社員君（文学部の文芸創作学科で学んだというが、本書に登場する作品はほとんど読んでいないと思われる。一体どういう文芸学科か？）には、本書を第一にオススメしようと思う。本書は勿論、所謂小説好きの一般社会人にも勧めることが出来る。平易に作家とその作品の内奥に迫る、吉本ならではの開かれた批評である。語り下ろしだそうだが、安直なものではない。編集者も優秀なのだろう。
