タイトル・表紙ともに、何かおどろおどろしい雰囲気でしたが、
実際はそうではありませんでした。
確かに、著者が現役のドクターということもあり、所々にある
詳細な描写に気が遠くなりそうなときもありましたが、
この本を通じて感じられるのは、著者の主人公である看護婦
に対する励まし、障害をもつ車掌と主人公の触れ合いなど
弱きものに対する慈しみのようなものでした。

こうした気持ちを無くしたとき、人は狂気の
研究にのめり込んでいってしまうのではないか。
フィクションでありながら、真に迫る迫力があり、
読み終わった後も、考えさせられることの多い作品でした。

無脳症児の臓器利用をテーマにしています。サスペンスやミステリーの類として楽しむことも出来ますが、「命の尊厳」という重大な問題提起もなされており、かなり密度の濃い読み応えのある作品です。

無脳症とはその名のとおり脳を欠いた状態で生まれることを言います。
無脳症で生まれた乳児は当然生きていくことができず早晩死んでしまいます。生命倫理学や医療現場ではこの無脳症児の臓器を、移植を必要とする乳児、幼児のための医療資源として用いてはどうかという議論が行われたりしています。特に心臓の場合はドナー乳児が死亡した後では使い物にならないので、無脳症児が死ぬ前にこれを取り出してレシピエントに移植しなければなりません。ここに倫理的問題点が浮かび上がります。
肯定派の一般的な論拠は、無脳症は意識や理性といったおよそ「人間」として必要不可欠な資質を完全に欠いているのだから、その生存を必ずしも保護する必要はない。移植によって助かる子供がいる以上、無脳症児がその生物学的生命を終える前に臓器を取り出すことは倫理的にも容認されるというものです。
一方、反対派はたとえ無脳症とはいえ「人間」であることにはかわりない、したがっていかにほかの子供を助けるためとはいえその命を道具のように扱うことは許されないと訴えます。
『臓器農場』はこうした事柄を小説の舞台に移したものと見ていいでしょう。賛成派の医師たちは上の主張から一歩進んで「人為的に無脳症児を作り出す」ということまで行っています。とはいえその理由は私益のためなのですが。
生命倫理は空虚な問題ではなくすべての人間にとって非常に重要なものだと思うのですが、どうも関心が薄かったり、感情的なだけの議論が横行していたりします。この作品はこうした問題に読者の意識をひきつける啓蒙的な側面も持っていると思います。
もっとも、とっつきにくい哲学小説と言うわけではありません。展開はスリリングだしヒロインの看護士と彼女に協力する医師との美しい恋愛も心を揺さぶるものがあります。
深いテーマと小説的な魅力の調和した良い作品だと思います。
