ビナード,アーサー
1967年、米国ミシガン州生れ。コルゲート大学で英米文学を学び、来日と同時に日本語で詩作をはじめる。2001年、詩集『釣り上げては』で中原中也賞、’05年に『日本語ぽこりぽこり』で講談社エッセイ賞、’07年には『ここが家だ―ベン・シャーンの第五福竜丸』で日本絵本賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

日本語で詩を書くアメリカ人、ビナードさんのエッセイがまた文庫になったので買ってしまいました。
町でふと目にした看板、日常でなにげなく使っている言葉など、我々がちょっと気がつかない言葉の奥深さ、面白さを、短いエッセイで伝えてくれます。

日本語を勉強し始めたころに覚えた言葉「波浪注意報」に関する一文など、ところどころ大笑いしてしまいました。

それにしても、この人のエッセイを読んでいると、言葉の習得というのは基本的に楽しいものなのだな、と思います。
巷にこんなに英語学校やら教材やらハウツー本やらがあふれ、学校では必須科目になっているのに、いくら勉強してもちっとも英語が話せるようにならない我々日本人の、語学に対する根本的な勘違いが、ちょっと悩ましくなります。

　新聞連載のエッセイだったらしくて一話が短く、各々余韻を味わえます。カタカナ語、ユビキタスの元になっている英語の語源が頭に入ったのも、嬉しい収穫。（辞書で読んでもイメージがつかめず、すぐ忘れて調べ直すこと数回）

　目次を見ているだけでも楽しいです。
「月極」は子供の頃同じことを考えていたので（そう、そう）と何度も心の中で相槌を打ちました。
「豆を撒かれたサンタ」もう読まずにいられません。
「猫への手紙」郵便配達が仕事だったおじい様の昔話は、遠い国の童話のようで心ほんわか。
「アリのまま」熊谷守一は熊田五郎（熊田千佳慕・クマチカさん）のことかと思ったのですが別人でした。それよりも、アリはどの足から一歩が出るかとはおもしろい！
「剣を鋤に、銃を薪に」４５億年という意味の深刻さに血の気が引く思いでした。

　どこを読んでもアーサー・ビナードさんの誠実さ、真ごころに感銘を受けます。
新潮文庫の１００冊に入れば若い人が、もっともっと手にしてくれる。学校の図書館にも置いて、長く長く読み継がれて欲しいと切望します。

多分詩人さんのエッセーということで期待しすぎていたのでしょう。個人的にはあまりこれといって目新しい話もなく、残念賞でした。

非母国語で書いているという点を勘案すれば、すごいとは思うのですが、読んで面白いかと言われると・・・。むしろ、英語でアメリカ人向けに書いてもらって、それを日本語に訳した方が面白かったのではないでしょうか。あと、日本語等の解釈において、二つ三つ勘違いしていらっしゃると思われる箇所があり、書籍化する時に誰もそれを指摘しなかったのだろうかと気になります。

あっさりとしているのでさらっと読めます。後、英語事情がちょっぴり分かります。印象的な良い詩がいくつか紹介されているのもマル。
