北海道から九州まで、昭和53年当時の国鉄のひと筆書き最長路線を旅した記録である。宮脇さんの紀行はどこから読んでも楽しめるわけだが、この作品に限っては長編小説を読むように、ぜひ、最初の１行から文字を追って読み進めていってほしい。日本の広さを存分に味わえるよき紀行である。

宮脇さんの旅から25年。この間ずいぶん日本は変わり、今年の２月にはあまたの魅力あふるる紀行を残して著者も天国に旅立たれた。今この作品を読み返してしみじみ思うのは、変わらぬのは日本の山河だけだなあ、という哀切の思いである。
ともかく「時刻表2万キロ」と並ぶ初期の大傑作であることは誰しも認めるところであろう。

　久しぶりに読んでみた。今でこそ片道最長切符の旅は、テレビ番組でも企画されるほど広く知られているが、当時はまだまだ「珍妙な旅」であった。片道最長切符発想の過程はアイディアに満ちており、切符の購入、車内改札の様子、駅員の対応などそのユニークさゆえの数々のエピソードはどれもおもしろく、読者を飽きさせない。

　ふりかかる難解な鉄道規則や、文字通り避けては通れない退屈な首都圏の路線も数々のアイディアをもっておもしろおかしく克服されており、読者を楽しませるサービス精神にあふれている。

　いつもの通り、宮脇さんの描写は精密かつ簡潔で、当時の景色はもちろん、匂いや声まで伝わってくる思いがする。表現も巧みで随所に往時の空気感が再現され、まことになつかしい。残念ながら宮脇さんは逝去されたが、著作の時点ですでに将来の歴史的資料性まで考えておられたのではないだろうか。だとすれば今後ますます価値は高まるはずである。

　初めての方だけでなく、一度読んだ方でもまた楽しく読めるだろう。

この「最長片道切符」というのは、国鉄線を利用して、一枚の切符では最も長い距離の切符を買ってその行程どおり旅行しようというものです。当時の国鉄は、今のＪＲよりもまだローカル線がたくさん残っていて、とてもバラエティに富んだ旅行になっています。前日の朝にいた駅からちょっとしか離れていないような駅にいる、ということもあったようで、限りないあほらしさなんだけど、限りなくそれをまじめにこなす宮脇さんらしい作品です。
