1931(昭和6)年福岡県生れ。明治大学卒。’56年、映画デビュー。’99(平成11)年、「鉄道員(ぽっぽや)」で第23回モントリオール世界映画祭主演男優賞、第44回アジア太平洋映画祭主演男優賞、第42回ブルーリボン賞主演男優賞、第23回日本アカデミー賞最優秀主演男優賞を受賞。著書に『あなたに褒められたくて』(第13回日本文芸大賞エッセイ賞)、『南極のペンギン』がある(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)
